What was the difference in the RAW file? In what you posted I see control of light spill (simulated by Pshop contrast?) and a softer look than I'd figure you get from a plain umbrella.

I prefer AA's over proprietary battery packs. You can get 2500+ mAHr NiMH's (and use any future capacity improvement) and you can get AA's everywhere on the planet. My Nikon Speedlight comes with a fifth-AA battery door extension to compensate for NiMH's lower voltage (fires fine with four, faster recycle with five).
I softened her skin up because the Tamron with the flash made it just a tad too sharp, so I have one extra layer set on overlay, and a 50px gaussian blur over it. Damn that tammy is sharp...I shot that at 5.6!

I guess you guys are right about the batteries, I guess I have to go get some decent rechargeable ones.

Try going much hotter on the flash and close down the lens...

You mean shoot at something like F11 with +2EV? Will do. Just for education purposes, what does that do/what will be the difference in the result?

You could hang a diffuser panel in front of the umbrella to soften the light. And if you want soft out-of-camera try stretching a nylon stocking over the lens or spend the big bucks for a diffusion filter like the Tiffen Softnet or B&W Softar.

Im looking to get an almost mannequin look of the skin out of the camera, without post processing....like this sort of....like perfectly smooth, etc etc.

Is this possible with makeup/light or is PP the only way to go?

It's makeup & strong strobes... See by going heavy with the lighting and stopping down the lens, only the brightest lit areas will get exposed. Everything else will fall off quickly.

Got it. Will try it again on monday.

I dont quite understand the mm settings on the flash though.

I had it set at 28mm in the shot in my first post, and it was about 5 feet away from the subject. How do I know what to set the flash to? Is there a formula for setting that?

Shoot it in manual mode. The zoom has to do with how wide the light will get diffused and relates to how it operates on the hot shoe. ie You wouldn't want the zoom at 200mm if you were shooting with a 14mm lens. The lens' field of view would be wider than the light being casted. If you are using an omni bounce or an umbrella it's moot. Use the manual settings to set power. Shoot with a faster ISO (200-400) and meter for incident near the mid tones favoring the highlights stopping the lens down as much as you can.
