What was the difference in the RAW file? In what you posted I see control of light spill (simulated by Pshop contrast?) and a softer look than I'd figure you get from a plain umbrella.
I prefer AA's over proprietary battery packs. You can get 2500+ mAHr NiMH's (and use any future capacity improvement) and you can get AA's everywhere on the planet. My Nikon Speedlight comes with a fifth-AA battery door extension to compensate for NiMH's lower voltage (fires fine with four, faster recycle with five).

I guess you guys are right about the batteries, I guess I have to go get some decent rechargeable ones.

Dave,
Try going much hotter on the flash and close down the lens...

You could hang a diffuser panel in front of the umbrella to soften the light. And if you want soft out-of-camera try stretching a nylon stocking over the lens or spend the big bucks for a diffusion filter like the Tiffen Softnet or B&W Softar.

Im looking to get an almost mannequin look of the skin out of the camera, without post processing....like this sort of....like perfectly smooth, etc etc.
Is this possible with makeup/light or is PP the only way to go?

It's makeup & strong strobes... See by going heavy with the lighting and stopping down the lens, only the brightest lit areas will get exposed. Everything else will fall off quickly.

Got it. Will try it again on monday.
I dont quite understand the mm settings on the flash though.
I had it set at 28mm in the shot in my first post, and it was about 5 feet away from the subject. How do I know what to set the flash to? Is there a formula for setting that?
