He's a member over at Toronto Subaru Club. Occasionally he shows how the setup is. Looks like multiple speedlights - one outside the passenger door shooting inside the cabin, and another over the camera's left shoulder that's highlighting the seat and passenger door.

It's all in the lighting. While the above images are done with strobes, similar results can be obtained with light painting. All that requires is a tripod, a cable release with bulb mode, and a nice flashlight.

looks like a controlled environment ... maybe a booth, with a flash etc. he also probably locked his shutter open and triggered the flash manually.

No need for a controlled environment, just a dark one.

doesn't even need to be THAT dark. As long as your ambient can't be exposed at your strobe exposure, then whatever is not lit by the strobe will be black.

look closely at how the steering wheel and shifter and console is lit while also looking at how the seat and door is lit will give you the answer.

You can tell from the shadows where his strobes are placed, off camera. Hard to tell how many he has exactly, but it's done very well. I have a somewhat similar shot, although I only used two lights and went for a more dramatic look by keeping the inside dark.
