Default P&S help

I tried searching through this area to see what people have been saying about P&S cameras. I couldn't find anything recent, and the topics I did find were kind of old, and I figured there is new stuff out now.

Anyway, I am looking for a new P&S camera for my girlfriend. She has a Canon (not sure which one), but it is a typical camera style. I want to get her something that is a lot more compact and easier for her to carry. (She is always complaining that we don't take enough pictures, but she doesn't like to carry around her current one...so this will make me a hero. ).

I was looking at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100 because it has a really large LCD screen on the back, and that is a plus. I was also looking at the Canon PowerShot SD1000, but I don't know what the screen is like on that one.

Uses. This will be our primary camera (until I can get my 30D) and will also be used for quick pictures and our carry around. So it'll need to be small enough to fit in her purse, and in my pocket. Resolution isn't a huge factor, as the pictures will likely stay on the computer. There may be a few that we will want to print out, so it should be able to take good pics. Red-eye correction, etc that normally comes with a camera.

So, camera gurus, what do you think of these two? Or are there any other suggestions that you can make?

Thank you.

For ultra small with good quality, look no further than the T100 or the Canon ELPH series. Both are excellent cameras, both take great photos, both are small, etc. Honestly, get the one you can get a better deal on, they are both that good. The Sony won CNETs editor's choice.

Well, it's good to know that I am at least looking at some good ones.

Thanks for the help. I'll just kind of look around and see which one I can get the best deal on. I think I am leaning more towards the Sony, but we'll see.

Thanks again.

If you want to check out many cameras look at this site. There are many informative reviews of just about any camera.

fuji f30, f31, for your high ISO needs.

the rest of the market is basically indistinguishable to me find one that fits her hand. i like the canon sd800is though if you have to go this route. small, starts at 28mm, and it's quick.

I recently purchased a Canon G7 and am pleased with the image quality and construction of the camera. What I don't like is the shutter lag, as compared with my dSLR. I do love the small size and availability of manual controls (should you want to use them).

Here is a picture I took of my grandson at a July 4th picnic.

I just picked up a Canon S5 IS for a trip to Costa Rica. I'm not a fan of P&S cameras over SLR bodies, but I didn't want to risk my good stuff during rainy season with a few days on a rapid river.

I picked up the S5 because it works with both my 550ex and 430ex flashes, is small enough to fit in my water-proof bags, has the equivalent focal length of 28-437mm, and has a Super Macro mode. With the Digic III processor it cycles decently fast for a P&S. I think the MP's are either 8 or 10 megapixels. And oh yeah - the main reason I got it: Image Stabilized.

Things I haven't been too thrilled with: Aperture is only from f3.5 to f8 and it shows the noise in darker shots. It handles ISO decently up to 400, and eventhough it goes up to ISO 1600, I'm going to try to keep it under ISO 400. I plan to use a Gorillapod with it as often as I can. I also wish it had a RAW mode.

If you wait till after the 24th, I'll post pictures from the trip. That could help you factor whether this is a camera you want to pick up.

Just re-read your post. My recommendation on the S5 might not be a good one because you're looking for something smaller. I think the S5 IS is the largest P&S camera Canon makes.
