Ok, so since I can't drive my S, I can't get rid of my frustration, so, I am picking on the mazda today.

I have been complaining to the dealership about squeeky brakes. As the weather turned cooler it started. The time I took the car in, the tech could not hear what I was hearing. Now the weather is even colder, they squeek like crazy. So I took it in this morning. Got the service manager to test drive the car with me. He said yikes. LOL I said see, and you thought I was just a paranoid girl. I made an appointment and everything. We get back to the dealership, and after a long chat about what it could be, and Oh the new material they use for the brake pads just isn't the same since they stopped using asbestos, blah blah. I said I don't care, I don't like noises from a new car. He proceeded to tell me it could also be associated to my driving habits. He said depending on who test drove the car to begin with, before I bought it, they may have not broke in the brakes properly. Or, possibly, being easy on the brakes at the time of stopping. I said, I am the only driver of this car, and I broke the brakes in myself. I know how to drive, no, hard emergency stops if it can be helped, blah blah blah. I tend to be fairly agressive, and not use the brakes as much as I should.. I said ever heard of a Honda S2000, he said yes, similar to the Miata, I said Umm, no So long and short, the brakes are glazed (or something to that effect) He said they would just rough them up a bit and they will help (not fix the problem) sheesh. So I said OK, let's get it done (I have an appointment) he said they couldn't do it today, because there 4 wheel brake tech called in sick. This was my day off, and now I will have to wait another 2 weeks until I am off again. Talk about the run around. So I went to Tim Hortons, and went made my way home.

Wait till it gets dry again and just pound the crap out of those brakes, if they still squeak, you'll get a new set anyway.

I hate annoying noises myself. When I had the prelude, it had a steering squeak that drove me nuts, when it was cold. Needless to say I took it in everytime the sound came back. New cars shouldn't make funny noises, if we wanted noises, we would have bought a Hyundai and burn oil after a couple years. Oh wait, we already burn oil

I'm inclined to say brake pads. Perhaps try some after market jobbies, providing that they aren't riddled with kevlar, which also induces some screeching. (Dave, remember my Golf? )
Hope things pan out alright Shel.

HondaGal:

I have been experiencing squeaky brakes on my S2000 when I back up out of the garage in the morning. After I 'brake' a few times, the squeaking is eliminated.

The squeaking is also present on my wife's 94 Accord EXR. Honda tech's told her the squeak is inherent on most Honda's

Is this a common Honda thing?

I was wondering from the S2000 Owners who do drive their car in the winter if they experienced squeaking. LIke I said above, my 98 prelude was nasty as well.

Ever pay attention to the Dodge Neon's, everyone I encounter on the road squeak. Summer and winter Possibly it is the material used on the brake pads. Somehow I do not think it is strictly Honda's

My brakes have never squealed. The pads might rust onto the rotors after a car wash and go "SNAP" the next morning but that's about it.
Squealing brakes can mean one of a couple of things.
1. The brake pad may have picked up pieces of grit or sand. If this is the case, continue to check the rotor for scoring. These develop into deep grooves as the grit begins gouge into the rotor face.
2. The brake pad anti-squeal plate needs more anti-squeal compound. If it's this, then it's just noise and won't do any damage.
How do you know which one it is? Without being there and listening to your brakes or looking at the rotor surface, I can't say for sure.
And a 3rd possibility: Does your model of car have drum brakes in the rear? If so and the squealing is coming from the rear, then it's brake dust and road grime that has worked its way inside the drum. Pulling the drums off, banging out the dust and then cleaning the shoes and drum with brake clean will resolve this.
