I'm not a fan of units with pre-loaded maps as i have not heard from anyone how they can load specific maps to it. Being in Canada, we are traditionally on the last end in receiving good stuff.
I purchased a Magellen Roadmate 760 in August just before my trip to LA. I found it to be useful and in many ways it is easier to use than the Nav system in my '05 RL. It seems to struggle to find gas stations through Montana, Idaho and Utah, but works very well once a person gets to the more populous areas. I would recommend the 760.

I'm starting to get a "like on" for the Nuvi 350. Similar features to the Garmin 2610, but in a relatively small size and yet has a fairly large display (for my weak, old eyes).

Dave, I have a Magellan Platinium - I wouldn't recommend it. It is very small and that is one of it's drawback imo. Unless you have previously told it where you want to go, it can be a pita to find where you want to go on the small screen. I now mostly use it as a gps antenna for my pc when travelling and use my pc screen to see where I want to go - a million times easier as the screen is so large. Drawback here of course is that you have to bring your laptop. For me this is not a problem as it basically goes with me anyway.
Marco, thanks for the heads up. Basically, my final criteria for this product will come down to screen size. As long as it does what I want it to do, the bigger the screen, the better - without having to do the laptop thing as you do.
