Photo Radars
I have a question, how exactly do those photo radar things work? There was a min van parked on the very right lane of Crowchild Trail Northbound today. At the intersection after the 17th ave turnoff and before the bow trail (towards downtown) turnoff.
It just got me thinking because since Crowchild is 3 lanes and the van is on the most right lane, does that mean it only gets cars on the 2 left lanes ?? or how does that work?? Just wondering
Don't think i was speeding, maybe i was over by like 5-8, but that's it
Anyways, yea... would anyone here know *ahem ahem Asif*
Thanks

In case Asif is not at libertay to discuss this, I'll give a go.
Photo radar shoots across the lanes of traffic at about 20-25 degrees from straight ahead. Generally, you have to be the only vehicle in the photo so that there is no confusion as to which car was speeding. You are "clocked" after you have passed the radar van and if you are above the set amount over the speed limit the camera takes the pic. I've heard that they usually set the limit at about 15 km/hr over the speed limit. As far as I know, they can take your pic in any lane. They just have to blow up the photo if you are in the far lane. At night, the dead give away is the FLASH of the camera.

I concur with XViper. And just to add, it is a common misconception that photo radar is operated and run by the Police. Quite the contrary; photo radar is the city's responsibility and is operated by special constables, not sworn peace officers.
