I drained the rear differential this morning and when I was putting the jack stands in place, I noticed some minor rust starting to form on the rocker panels. It hasn't "fully" blown out yet, but I'd like to prevent it from spreading if possible! Attached a few pics - any ideas on fixing this? It's in a hard to see spot, so effectively stopping the rust is more important to me than looking perfect!
The first thing to do is remove the rust from the seam and rocker panel down to clean metal. Hopefully the rust doesn't extend underneath the seam sealer, otherwise you will have to remove it as well. Once you've done that spray the newly exposed metal with Boeshield (developed by Boeing Aircraft) to neutralize any remaining rust and seal the metal surface. Once this is done you can do your masking off and prime and spray paint the rockers.
I lived there for a year and a half. Rusting cars were common but unbelievable for this California boy. Moved back west. I have a 94 Thunderbird, purchased new here by father in law, without a single speck of rust; it is my airport car so it is left out.
My airport beater in Minneapolis rusted so bad I had to put rubber mats and expanding foam to keep water from entering the trunk and ruining my bags. My kids remarked they could see the road through the floor in the back seat!
