So has anyone ever been able to put a stereo pair into the S-Pods? It seems to me that it would sound a bit odd with the left channel directly behind the driver's head and the right channel directly behind the passenger's head. How much volume approximately is in the S-Pod enclosure? Has anyone ever tried to get some small full ranges tucked near the corner of the "shoulder to head" part of the head rest?

 

Actually, I'm not a huge fan of aftermarket head units, because they are often times too flashy, more complicated than my non-audiophile needs, and scream "steal me!". So, that said, I'm going to stick with a stock headunit. The reason I'm asking about this, is I want a cassette player, and there was a S2000 compatible Honda head unit w/ cassette in 2000-2001. This is going to go into my new 2005 S2000, and will be driving the factory door speakers, factory door tweeters, either S-pods, or the factory headrest speakers, and an Alpine (or OEM) 6-disc changer (I've since found out the new 8-disc won't work with the older units). I don't need the best sound, because my ear can't tell the difference anyway, and cost is less of an object then keeping it simple, and keeping it looking clean and like it came from the factory. Cutting and hacking to install aftermarket speakers doesn't really appeal that much me. To that end, it says a lot about the S-pods, as they look completely factory.

 

I totally agree with your opinion of aftermarket HU's. I hate the complexity and tiny controls! My entry level Alpine allowed me to add an amp & sub though.

Considering your needs, I'd look into some 5.25 component speakers with a sensitivity rating allowing them to work with low power; installed in S-Pods. I believe you'll save money, and get improved sound quality over the factory solution. (I've yet to hear the Honda headrest speakers myself.)

With the radio door up the HU only says no radio here... I constantly get comments from mechanics about the lack of stereo in the car

I agree with not cutting corners also as you learn that you CAN get good sound in a ragtop. Well placed tweeters and s-pods and about 20-25 Watts RMS/channel will get you clear good sound at 70 mph/top down.

 

I didn't do any cutting. This is the only car I know that has a door on the radio. It doesn't matter whether you keep the original Honda HU or get a good one. No one will notice with the door closed.

Ben777, I have a factory HU, inferior speakers, a CD changer that will work with the factory HU, and an undersized two channel amp that is 35w per channel that I will sell you cheap.

I cheaped out and it cost me dearly. I learned from my mistake and now have a sound system that I can enjoy that looks factory but is ten times better.

After all, we buy convertibles so that we can drive with the top down on a pretty day. Most people want to be able to hear good crisp and clear music whether the top is up or down.
