I believe that any Alpine head unit with the 'Steering Wheel Remote ready' option will work with Modifry's Alpine hardwired DCI.

You need the IR version. The 9856 does not have the 3.5mm jack for wired control. The IR window is in the upper right corner of the head unit, so it's easy to hide the IR emitter. I just installed a 9856 and the Alpine IR DCI works perfectly. Be sure to get the Modifry wiring harness to keep from splicing into the factory wiring harness. It has the extra wires needed to connect the DCI.

It's OK. I'm still getting used to it. It has the same problems as most other newer head units - too many buttons that arent' organized in a logical fashion. Luckily, the DCI gives you control of the functions used 90% of the time, so you don't have to go searching for the right button.

The sound is a huge improvement over stock - and that's with the stock speakers. I don't have the iPod cable yet, but it should be here today. This was the main motivation in changing the head unit in the first place.

Guessing that the 9857 doesn't work with the wired DCI either then =\
