hummm... $400 bucks... lets see..
First what kind of music do you like? and do you like really crisp highs, strong mids or strong bass?

Also do you plan to upgrade your setup slowly little by little or will this be it.

I guess i forgot to mention some things.

I like everything from rap to zepplin.

I'd like a descent bass sound but it doesnt need to be top of the line. I just dont want to to pop if i turn it up.

I like to listen to music loud. I do plan on adding little by little but again im not looking for something that is going to win contest.

thanks

Humm.... well, I would start off with a new HU since you'll be slowly upgrading as the budget allows

This is a nice HU for the money ALPINE CDA-9830 CD MP3 WMA receiver($234.00)
You want to make sure the HU you get has Time Correction option. Because once you start to add rear speakers be it behind the seats or S-Pod style your going to have to correct the timing so it will sound proper; even with just upgrading your front speakers you really should correct the timing.

Then you should get yourself a nice set of speakers. Something like these are good for the money:

Component sets:
MB Quart DSE-216 ($149.00)
MB Quart RCE-216 ($189.00) <- these ones are a little nicer and in the long run will serve you better as you continue to upgrade and grow your system.
Diamond Audio M361 ($159.00)
Alpine SPR-176A ($145.00)

Coaxial speaker:
Diamond Audio M361I ($119.00)
Kenwood Excelon KFC-XR600 ($129.00) <- These sound nice for a coaxial speaker.
MB Quart DKE-116 ($99.00)

If you get components just remember you'll have to cut the tweeter into the door. Its very easy, but then again I've done it many many times and so its easy to me but it can be intimidating. You can call me and I can walk you though it. Those are the parts I would do first.

why does it "have" to be mounted in the door? that can be very misleading. i think you should change that to an option for mounting. seriously, some of your advice sucks

D'knight is right:

For a noticeable improvement with $400 , you can't go wrong with a new HU and fronts.

The HU is the right place to start, esp. in an '01. Your system will sound better from that change alone and you will have a building block from which to build an entirely new set-up. Start with the new HU and if you get the bug, get an amp and some really nice fronts. (High end fronts require an amp to perform properly.) Otherwise, as D'knight suggests, get entry level fronts and a new HU; it'll be a whole new world.

ATF kook, your attitude needs improvement pal.

damn darkknight, when did you start identifying the type of sound he wanted before you reccommended speakers?

from about 20 minutes of searching, i dug up 1 thread(https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.ph...pic=100694&hl=) where you suggested the speakers you have right away in your first post. how can you do that without understanding what his needs are? for the record, that is the only speaker recommendation i found from you. i never read a response from you where you helped identify his needs. now all of a sudden you do.

damn, did i have an effect on the way you help people now? i could have sworn i made it an issue in the past that people reccommend what they have all the time without thinking about what the person wants.

Again, you have just flooded us with topic-related useful information. Do you own an S? Or are you just trolling for business, 'cause that's what it looks like from the crap you post.

And no, I didn't waste 20 minutes searching for all of your posts. Knowledgable or not, you post like a total ass. Your internet attitude is not what our community is about. Step off.

Sincerely,
