Bump for creative subs/enclosures inside cabin, re-established links to pictures of s2kmugen's sub.

Everything I have read about this 6.5" JL 6W0 subwoofer is beyond positive (for people who have them). Only negative comments are from people who have never heard one and can't understand how good bass can come from a 6" driver.

It seems like an excellent solution for the S2000 for those who don't want to take up trunk space.

From product sheet:
Net sealed enclosure volume= 0.175 ft3
Driver Displacement= 0.019 ft3
Total enclosure volume= 0.194 ft3 (less than 1 and a half milk jugs!)

Mine will come in this week and I'm plotting and scheming over exactly where I'm going to put it. It will definitely require a custom enclosure.

My hope is to do a combo of the Modifry approach (but without cutting any steel) and the gamecockS2K approach. The foam wedge itself represents 60% of the needed total volume. I really like gamecockS2K's idea of starting the enclosure with a 6" PVC coupling to provide a good driver mount.

Its really hard to know what will work and what won't until I have the driver in hand and can test fit various orientations and locations. There is a lot of space in the passenger footwell area but it's all very odd shaped and disconnected.

Good bass can definitely come from small drivers. Headphones do it all the time. LOUD good bass is another matter.

The good news on the 6W0:

It works in VERY small enclosures, like 6 liters. That's small. (.175 cu ft = 5 liters)
It has a very flat response curve, so it won't sound boomy.
It can take all of the 75W it's rated for (and more) without exceeding Xmax.
(this means you won't physically damage the driver by running it at it's maximum rated power)
So I agree that it's capable of good bass.

I would recommend a good 100-150 watt amp since it appears to be built to withstand some over-driving.

The Bad news:
It's not very efficient. While JL's advertising statement that "efficiency is NOT an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability" is technically correct, when you couple really low efficiency with very small surface area you get - you guessed it - low output capability.

Running at maximum power (75 watts) it's about 9 dB lower output than the cheap 10" I put in my footwell. You would have to drive it with 600-700 watts to equal the output of my 10" at 130 watts*. That's a pretty significant difference in output, one that will be noticed if compared to a good 10" or a great 8". While you can make up maybe 2 dB by overdriving the sub, it will still never compete with a bigger driver.

But overall it might be a very good addition to your system, depending on what you have and what you expect. If you are running the stock HU and speakers it should make a significant improvement. If you have great upgraded door speakers and a 75WPC or better amp driving them, they may keep going when the little 6W0 runs out of steam.

*I'm comparing to my 10" because you are obviously familiar with my install, not to say that what I did is "better". There are trade-offs for everything.

The Car Audio place that sponsors me wants me to bring in my car, so they can go crazy with it. One thing they want to do is put a Kicker Solobaric L7 8" in between the seats where the secret compartment is. I have a harness bar there, so I can't open it anyway. I don't know if I'm going to let them do it, but if they do it, I'll let you know how it worked out.

UPDATE:
This is how it turned out.

Modifry, thanks for your comments and recommendation, and for the adventure in your footwell you documented so well!

You're certainly right about this; however, I find that the only time I wish the 6W0 had more steam is when I'm listening to rap/hip-hop, which is pretty rare for me. I'm more of a rock and country kind of guy so the sub is ideal for me. It's only worth a darn in the cabin area though.

Here's why...
Since I had the extra amp power and I had already built a box for a previous project, I added a second 6W0 in the spare tire area in a ported box. The guy I buy JL stuff from here in town suggested porting it. Anyway, it was working for a while when I hooked it up, but somehow, at some point a speaker wire had come off of that box and I didn't even notice it until I was installing my satellite radio stuff last week! So, my point is, if you can get this guy in the cabin, it'll make a ton of difference as you'll be hearing/feeling it going 90 down the interstate. If you put it in the trunk, I hope you enjoy it most at stop lights because that's about the only time you can really feel it!

Good luck and let us know what you think once you get it in!

I think you might could get an 8" sub in there if you built the box right. It'd probably require some fiberglass work because the box I built is right at 7" tall and it's a pretty tight squeeze. I believe you could fit an 8" tall face but it'd have to get narrower pretty quick from there, I think. Here's mine:

FWIW, I did have this in without the amp mounted to the side like that and spun it in all 4 directions. (facing forward, backward, left, right) I felt it the most in the drivers seat facing the back. So, that's why it's facing this way.

Another thing you could do is 2 6W0's. An 8 would be much better though IMHO. I think a lot of these 6W0's, but the one in the cabin is worth 3 of these in the trunk, at least!

Good luck!

PS - If you want, I've got a sealed enclosure you could play around with that I made before this ported one. It's got no carpet or anything, but it'll give you an idea of what you could have back there if you've already bought a 6W0 to play with. PM me if you're interested in it. I can get a picture of it for ya!

Hey GamecockS2K, is there any way you could post the first 5 pictures from page one of this thread? It would be really helpful to see your clay/mold/fiberglassing from the beginning.

I've never done fiberglassing before and I just picked up materials today. Should be an interesting adventure...
