Default Advice on switching component speakers ...

Earlier this year, I upgraded my stock stereo system (MY'02), which now consists of:

- stock head unit
- Kenwood Excelon KFC-XR61 6-1/2" component speakers in front (http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/product....&productId=2428)
- JL Audio stealthbox with 10" sub in trunk
- Rockford Fosgate Punch 501X amp (65x4 @ 4 ohms, 125x4 @ 2 ohms, 250x2 @ 4 ohms, 12dB fixed 80Hz/120Hz HP/AP/LP crossover, RCA and High Level Inputs in a Solar-Tex cast aluminum heatsink)

I've had the system now for about 6 months and love it with the top down (which has been about 90% of my driving throughout the summer). Now that I'm top up more often, I haven't been too happy with the sound of the front speakers. The mid's seem a little "tinny". I've adjusted the tweeters so they aren't as strong/loud, but still find that some music is bugging me. From what I remember, the stock speakers seemed to have a better mid-range sound, albeit not nearly as loud or clear.

The design of these speakers uses a smaller magnet, and I'm wondering if that's why the sound isn't what I'd expect. I listened to a bunch of speakers while I was shopping for the system, but ended up choosing these due to the shop's recommendation - and they sounded fine in the showroom.

Does anyone have suggestions on another type of component speaker that they really love? I listen to a variety of music, but mostly alternative rock.

I have MB Discus line and I think they sound tinny due to the titanium tweeter. I'd recommend looking at the CDT line with the silk dome soft tweeter.

Exactly what CRX said. I LOVE! the tinny sound, so the only tweeters I buy are either aluminum or titanium. But dont ditch the whole set. Just get new silk tweeters.

Hmm, so you guys think it's due to the tweeter material rather than the design of the midrange speaker? That would definitely be an easier solution (not to mention probably less expensive)!

The tinny sound is 100% from tweeter and is 100% because it is made of a metal. Get silk dome tweeters and sell the titaniums. Actually....you might even be able to trade with someone here.

Sounds like a good idea. Off to the WTB and FS forums ... thanks!
