BTW, if you don't have an iPod you don't need iPod input (sounds kinda obvious don't it).

What you need is AUX input. There are a bunch of low cost head units that have AUX these days.

Next issue is dash control. Easy with a Modifry DCI but that's half your budget blown right there.
Fair warning though, sound quality will suffer.

I used to play my Zune through the aux, the sound stage was horrendously narrow. Has to do with the difference in processing. For your MP3 player, the output doesn't have to be true, wide stereo as it's going to headphones which, due to the physics involved, force the stage to appear wider than what is actually being output. Unfortunately, the speakers in your car aren't subject to quite the same physics, so the sound stage becomes narrow, and lacks resolution.

Time alignment won't properly correct for this, btw, because it has to do with the limited processing ability of the MP3 player.

Just a heads up...

Well I want to thank you all for your input. However, in doing research I have another problem, when they took out my OEM they kept the mounting brackets. Can I get these at like a Best Buy audio installation or am I SOL??

Quick question for those of you with the Alpine 9886: I don't use the USB connection for anything - is there a way to "remove" the option when scrolling through between TUNER/iPOD/DISC? i just want to be scrolling through those 3 options. Kinda weird request I know but it just annoys me every time I have to scroll past it.

Yeah I hate having to push a button more then I have to. You think THEY would make it easier on us.

I had it installed at a shop so there shouldn't be anything in it ... hmmmmm. I think I may just pull out the deck to see whats going on behind the scenes.

I didn't see your budget..... I know where you can get a 9884 (new alpine) with an ipod cable ,and wiring harness for under 200.... that's a steal right there
Crutchfield has it for $199 with an iPod cable and free "installation" equipment which includes the harness... am I missing something here?

I guess I am just having a hard time justifying the purchase of a unit for my iPod, the modifry connector for the Alpine units is for than a decent cable for the OEM radio...
