Aftermarket Headunit Plug and Play Harness
I know this is dumb and I should know it but I wanted to put in an aftermarket headunit, mostly for the aux cord and car toys wanted like $200 for parts and labor. I figured I would just buy a $100 headunit and buy the harness and install it myself. Question is, does anyone have the link to such harness that is as easy as plug and play and do I need one of those fittings or will the new headunit just take the place of the stock one. Ive seen the diy and it seems straight forward but obviously there aren't very many pictures so I just wanted to make sure. Car is an AP1 if it matters.
Thanks in Advance guys.

A head unit install in the S was BY FAR the easiest install I have ever done. No new bezel or anything was needed, but most aftermarket head units will come with a small plastic surround to make the radio look a little more...OEM I guess.
As far as your question goes, I would recommend ordering your headunit from a place like Crutchfield.com, where they will include the harness and everything needed at no additional cost to you. They have good prices, great shipping, and great customer service. If you already have the radio, or are buying on from somewhere else, then most sites (like crutchfield or sonic electronix) will have a section on the site you can go to just to buy the specific harnesses/adapters/etc needed to install an aftermarket unit
You can also try your luck at a place like BestBuy or even walmart to see if they have a universal harness that might work, but that is entirely up to you if that is something you want to try.
Hope this helps
This thread belongs in the Electronics subforum but if you want plug and play then get Modifry's PnP harness and a supported brand of head unit. No idea if it will work without the DCI but you can always ask Modifry.
If you don't get a plug n play harness the one's you splice together are really easy. Color coded and even have what they do exactly, just match them up. All you'd need is butt connectors and crimping pliers, or if you prefer you can use the twist connectors.

Hey guys just got my stuff in just wanted to make sure I had the right idea about going about this stuff. I understand one is ground and thatll push into the new unit, the blue plug will plug into the adapter in the second picture and then the black plug in the second picture plugs into the new unit so im guessing I need to splice all the matching colors to each other? and then plug and play?
And the two adapters seem to have two different size wires, will this cause a problem blowing fuses or anything else?

The single wire is the antenna wire. Yes, the adapter harness and the new headunit harness should
use the same (standardized) colors, but if you have any doubt the headunit instructions and the
adapter harness bag should list what each wire is for. You may have unused wires on either or both
harnesses - tape the ends with electrical tape to make sure they have no exposed wire to short.
Note that the dash controls will not work with the new headunit without a dash control interface (DCI).
One popular DCI is made by Modifry.
Note that the OEM headunit has two wires that control headunit lighting - "dimmer" and "illumination."
Most aftermarket headunits only support one, usually "illumination" regardless of what color they use
in the harness. It's purpose is to tell the headunit when the headlights are on to dim the display for
nighttime use.
And no, it doesn't matter that the wire sizes are different.
Another suggestion - disconnect the battery (-) terminal when doing electrical work in case a wire
touches something it's not supposed to while you are working.
