Default Alpine 9850Ri iPod navigation

Thats this one...

Does anyone have one?

I've got my iPod hooked up to it, and it drives me mad for navigation. I know the easiest way is to make playlists... But... When i want to search artists, is there a quick way to do it? It takes FOREVER to scroll through them as i have so many, and doesn't seem to be a shortcut to jump to a letter, or to hop through quickly in chunks?

I did read somewhere about pressing the 1 - 6 buttons to jump 1/6 of the way through, but thats nonsense. I end up sat there scrolling round and round and round to get anywhere.

I have the manual and it says diddly squat it. I'd use the ipod itself, but its comes up with ALPINE on the screen when its plugged in, so i cant even scroll from there.

you could always add a 3.5 jack from the AINET connection in the rear, only down side is it will not charge but you control it through your ipod. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-l6pkjVQ...rs-Cables.html

Thanks for the tip. I'd rather have it connected as is though, as i'd like it charging and its also hooked up to my audio controls next to the wheel.

I was just wondering if im not aware of a method or function that allows you to reasonably navigate arists. If no such function exists i guess i'll have to stick to playlists for the most part

It's not nonsense. I use them all the time on my 9886. If you don't want to scroll so much then use the presets. They don't eliminate scrolling but they make quite a difference.

You can rewire if you want to use the iPod directly and still have it charge.

Well my 1-6 buttons certainly don't work. Iv pressed all of them and they don't skip me through.

Won't I lose sound quality too though by re-wiring it as suggested?

Given iPod sound quality is largely awful, it probably won't make much difference.

According to the manual, the 1-6 buttons don't work as they do with the better Alpine HUs. (It's called Direct Search).

Best bet is to create more playlists.
