Alpine head unit battery connection
Hi,
Just got an S2000
and am replacing the head unit with a CDA-9857R. I want to wire it through to the battery but just want to know how I make the connection to the battery +ve terminal. Does it go directly to the terminal or is there another connection point, maybe near the engine fuse box. Can I pick up the connector at Halfords? Anyone got any pictures?
thanks

Maybe I don't understand your question, but I don't understand why you would need to wire the new strereo to the battery. When you take out the old streeo, unplug it from it's wiring harness. Go to any decent car stereo store and pick up a honda wiring harness, ($12 US) and wire it up to the harness that came with the new stereo as per the color coded instructions. Then plug the new harness into the existing one in the car and all the connections are made for you. If you do a search on these boards, you can find a picture of what each wire on the original stereo harness goes to. Hope I didn't make this sound more complicated than it actually is.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I'll be getting the KCE-865B alpine to Honda interface that's available in the UK but there is a yellow wire which will need to be connected direct to the battery as well. Apparently this is because the Alpine head unit draws more power than the OEM unit. I've searched the forums and some people wire this to the internal fuse box (on the drivers side in the UK) but the majority seem to go direct to the battery, routing through a grommet in the passenger footwell. (The people doing this all seem to be UK based so not sure why a different approach is needed to the US?)

weird...
when i installed my 9857, there were 2 power wires. one red and one yellow.
the yellow requires a constant 12v, and the red one is ignition switched. the honda harness does have the constant 12v from the battery as well as the ignition switched.
I didnt know that US versions were different than overseas in power draw...???

There are actually 2 power wires to hook up for a Alpine deck. A yellow and a red or orange, I forget. The yellow has a fuse on it, that is the power. The red or orange is power also, but it's more of keeping the deck powered when the car is off so that you don't lose your presets and settings. Both wires are hooked up to the factory harness, there should be no need to run a seperate wire straight to the battery. At least that's the case in the states.
If you do need to run a seperate power source, why not to the auxilary power near the fuse box. I'd attach it to the ACC, which is the bottom one.

actually, the US versions for Alpine have also suggested wiring the HU constant power up to the battery for a while now.
there's been a number of debates on the subject in here, and on whether it really is needed. if you're in doubt, go with the method recommended by Alpine. (for what it is worth, i did not - and mine is tied into my OEM harness, but i'm powered all by outboard amps as well.)
the easiest way is to route the wire up through the grommet behind the battery... (at least for us w/ LHD). pull your battery out, and see if there's a grommet located behind the battery. the way i prefer to connect to the battery is to crimp on a ring connector to your power lead (for the radio), and then pull the nut on your battery clamp and put the ring on the bolt and replace the nut. (obviously, you've got to have a ring large enough to do this...)
best of luck
