Souljah...

How does it work with the older 7XXX headunit? Are you able to do everything as described in the manual? How much have you used it?

I have an older unit but it has the quick search ability. I'm curious if it will work. I could just order from Crutchfield and try I suppose. They have free return shipping.

I thought the same thing but when I asked the shop, they said anything that has the (A) should work. They did the install for me in an hour and it worked. As for doing everything in the manual, I haven't sat down to read it carefully but I did play around with it a little and most of the features I read about work but I can't say it does EVERYTHING yet. I just got it yesterday so haven't used it to much.

As for the searching thing, its quite slow like the review said. 1 song per second.

Anyone planning on Buying a new Alpine head unit and the KCA-420i, should wait till tomorrow (Oct 1) to buy. If you buy a CDA-9826, 9827 or 9830, you will get $30 of the $99 price of the 420i and if you buy the CDA-9831 or 9833 you will get $50 off. I talked to crutchfield today, who has the 420i in stock and they said they will be participating in this Alpine offer, but you have to wait to order it until tomorrow because the offer is from Oct 1 - Dec 31. Hope this info is helpull. I will be purchising the CDA-9830 and the 420i from crutchfield myself tomorrow.

FYI: You can get that HU for $109 less than Crutchfield charges you. Try froogle:

Edit: and discountjungle.net, a very reliable seller, has it for $235:

I did notice though, that Discount Count Jungle wants $43 for 3 day shipping. Crutchfield is free 2-3 day shipping, so not much of a difference after that (maybe $20), but I guess $20 is $20. Also I believe Alpine will not honor the warranty if the products are not bought from an authorized dealer.

Something I find annoying about the interface is I like it have my music on mix but everytime I leave the car and get back in, I have to put it back on mix. Is this normal?

Haven't figured out if all the search functionality is there yet for pre-'04 headunits. One thing I already notice is the scroll is very slow, stops at each title before going on to the next.
Oh yeah....I modded my dash...

after fiddling with the unit for most of today I honestly don' t think it's compatible with the CDA-9815. I was semi-able to scroll album titles but it wasn't at all efficient. Anyway maybe someone else with a pre-'04 headunit will have better luck.

I went to my local Alpine dealer and played with the 9835 and 9833. I liked the 9835's display (shows more text) and ordered one tonight. If anyone is interested in my 9815, send me a pm and make an offer. I paid $374 for it less than a year ago. Thanks.

I ordered one from Crutchfield today. There's a 10% off $50 coupon floating around for Visa purchases, made the total $89 shipped.
