Alpine Type R's and Alternatives
After listening to most of the speakers in the sub $300 price range, I found I really liked the Alpine Type R 6.5s. I am just a little confused about it's max power rating of 50watts especially with only an 86db sensitivity rating? I currently have an old RF 600a4 laying around, but that's 75X4 which seems way too high. I will also be replacing my deck at the same time, and was thinking about going with a V-Drive unit and not running an amp for the fronts. But would this be enough power for the Type Rs? Running a small amp just for the fronts would be too much of a waste since I will most likely be installing a sub in the future and do not want to run 2 amps. Even if I did, would 50 watts be loud enough for a 86db speaker in a convertible?
Are there any other speakers that may fit my situation better? I am looking for a warm sound (not bright!) with as much tight bass as a 6.5 can put out at least until I get a sub.

I ALMOST bought the Type-R's because I too was trying to stay under that budget. But once I heard the Focal 165K's it was all over. You can get the new 165KP's on eBay for $349 and sound quality is night and day(at least for me it was). I'm not saying the Type-R's weren't good, just that for an extra $50(over your $300 limit) the Focal's are worth the extra dough.
Good luck...

Well my price range isn't fixed at $300, but the problem is that I want to buy the speakers at a local shop since that will be the only part of my system I will need installed (I just don't have the time or a garage to do it myself right now). I have not heard the Focals yet, but I think they list at over $600 which is just too much for this car. I am sure at $350 they are a steal though.
i am in the exact same situation.
my only current upgrade is a HU with a built in amp. i am now looking for the best possible speakers w/o purchasing an amp. i was also looking for ease of installation, but i guess im going to have to do some cutting if i want quality.

Those Alpine Rs sound great. For the price, I'd say they are near the very top in the "value" department. Infiniti Perfects are high up there too, but more expensive.
I did end up getting BA Pros, though, for about $320 shipped. They sounded the best to me beside the Perfects and Alpine Rs, but were also the most expensive.
Haven't heard the Focals, but heard many say they love the bass response and how they sound. You could hardly go wrong with the Focals, or the BAs, Rs, or Perfects for that matter.
Still amazing to me how you can absolutely crank them and not hear distortion. Engineering marvels (certainly compared to standard crap s2k speakers, in any case).

I have the Type R components in my doors and my S-pods, and they sound great! However, if you don't want the tweeter to be too bright, make sure you set the crossover to flat. Also, the 6.5" will require a little trimming of the door to fit.
