Amp rack inside spare tire
[this thread originally began here]
I made a spare tire amp rack a few years ago - my goal was to make a rack that would hold the
amp securely, would allow me to use the factory wheel clamp, and would be removable without tools.
Unfortunately I didn't take pictures then, and won't be able to for a couple weeks, but I'll give
you a quick overview from (probably faulty) memory:
I likely used machine screws and nuts, with the screw coming up from underneath and nut on top,
probably countersunk for a smooth bottom.
Sorry I can't give you better info/pictures - car's been laid up for the winter and I'm swamped.
Yes, the MDF donut is just for the amp/plywood rack to attach to. The center hole is so you can still use the
factory spare wheel clamp.

you a quick overview from (probably faulty) memory:
- made an MDF disk which fit in the wheel, with a cutout in the center to access the clamp
- attached the disk to the wheel with carriage bolts & wingnuts
- cut 1/4" plywood to match the size of the amp, with a short tab sticking out of one end
- mounted the amp to the plywood
- drilled a couple holes in the small overhang on the opposite end from the tab
- screwed a raised slot on the disk to receive the tab, thus holding one end of the amp/rack
to the disk when inserted - screwed two threaded inserts into the disk at the other end, lining up with the holes in the
plywood amp rack - rack is held down with two wing screws
- clamp down wheel (with disk) as normal, with raised slot on disk at back
- slide amp on plywood rack into mounted wheel
- once in wheel, slide amp/rack until tab is held in slot
- tie down front of rack with wing screws

probably countersunk for a smooth bottom.

factory spare wheel clamp.
Sorry it's taken so long. Here are the [few] pictures I have:

Base rack mounted in spare, with hardware to mount amp rack to base visible - the plywood
slot thing was cut from the amp rack board to aid alignment when sliding amp rack in

Base rack held to spare with wingnuts

Spare tire back in place with hold-down visible

Amp rack slides in, held at front under the metal strips and at rear by visible wingscrews
Sorry, I neglected to take pictures of the amp rack itself, but it's just cut out plywood.
As you can tell, all the work went into the engineering rather than the fabrication.
