As much as I am not a fan of JL....it is a proven fact that JL subs are best with JL amps. So I would say JL.

As far as the subs go.....I have heard at LEAST 15 cars with W7's....here is my short review.

Pros.........Hits hard....

Cons.....sounds like crap....not crisp at all....
weighs a ton
sounds like total crap if underpowered.
Will blow if overpowered (not too much either)
EXPENSIVE!!!!

So.....thats what I think......if you want some quality bass, you cant go wrong
(in my opinion best ----------> very good

1.Soundstream Davinci
2.Eclipse Ti
3.Brahma
4.Soundstream Tarantula (also the amps are craaaaaaazy)
5.IDMAX

These are pretty much top of the line subwoofers and will def. satisfy your need for thump a LOT better than a W7......

Bring on the flames boysssss

Sorry to the guy who thinks the JL sub sucks
I personally think the one JL w7 in our car sounds great, actually bass and quality sound than any s2k system ive heard yet and thats with just one sub. I actually have a JL audio w7 in my s2k with the JL 500/1 amp running it. All i can say is WOW!!! the amp is plenty for that sub so dont go over board. if you have any questions do a search under "custom JL audio w7 stereo" then you will see my set up. the amps and the subs all custom in the trunk

hrm... i haven't heard one myself, but most reviews that i read just say "loud", big, and expensive. i've never seen mention of it being a high SQ sub, but at the same time i don't recall seeing it as a non-SQ sub... *shrug*.

still, bang for buck on a big sub w/ big excursion, and great sound quality -- i'm going to go w/ b-man and say Brahma or ED A series... big subs, lots of bass, and small boxes.

the e12A.22 was met with very high praise from Mobile Entertainment, performing to just under 12W7 numbers as well....
From oct/nov 03' issue of Mobile Entertainment review of e12A.22
In car frequency response - 9Hz - 120Hz within a 1.8db variance (lower than a 12w7)
In car Max SPL - 129.4dB (One of the loudest 12" drivers ever tested)
here's copy of the review if you're like me and don't get ME.

Nope...they're the other way around...a sub with incredible SQ that also has the capability to get loud

This is, of course, in a much bigger sealed box than JL recommends...like double the recommendation...

For the record.......never did I, nor will I ever say that JL sucks. Thats 4th grade talk. I DO NOT LIKE JL for one reason.....they are EXTREMELY overpriced. When I say something sucks....(I rarely use the word sucks)....I mean a better product could be purchased for less money. Simple....as consumers....this is what determines whether a product is great or sucks. A McIntosh Amplifier, which costs thousands of dollars, has no 300 dollar equal (or anything less than a few grand for that matter). Economically speaking, this makes the McIntosh amp a great amp {worth the money}. Suppose Alpine made an amp just as good...i mean down to every spec (quality and all), for 200 bucks, then yes....the McIntosh amp would be garbage. Simple economics. I have built, heard, the W7 in MANY applications, trucks, vans, sedans....with very well made boxes....the sub just aint all that. YellowSSM.....if you think the W7 is a great SQ sub.....youre missing out on some crazy gear. The W7 is not even in the same league as the Eclipse Ti and Davinci, those subs will pound out windows, sound cleaner than Martha Stewarts bathroom, and hold power like its free. Moreover, those subs can be had for either the same or lesser amount of money than the W7.

I guess (Phil knows) I am getting a rep for hating JL...but its not hate at all. JL offers nothing revolutionary and act (charge) like their products are one of a kind. JL used to be great, now just riding their reputation. For ALL MADE JL products, they is ALWAYS a cheaper and better alternative.

Just my .02

I guess SQ's so subjective that there's really nothing I can say beyond that you really do have to hear a W7 in a proper enclosure (not JL's recommended)...and yes, I've heard Eclipse Ti's and PG's Ti too (The sub that's PG tries to market as the W7 killer). Off the record, even at Adire HQ, a couple guys conceded that there's no better subwoofer on the market than the W7 and they've seen a sub or two in their day out there...

Actually, the closest I've heard would be a Focal Utopia sub...They come up a little short in extension but they're just as "musical" as the W7. However, they do cost $1000 each and you'd probably need half a dozen of them to equal the loudness of a W7.

And of course SPL...which isn't subjective...The W7's compression and power handling are what really make it worthwhile. Nothing out there can take watt after watt and continue to turn it into detailed, musical bass like the W7 (as opposed to woofers that start turning power into crap after a while). Actually, I gues this would be SQL because the W7 can make things loud that aren't just single-note fart noises...
