In a side-by-side comparison with the JBL GTO 630s, the owner of the JBLs said that my Alpines sounded better. I am constantly amazed at how much cleaner the sound is with the Alpines.
DP,
If you've already decided upon a speaker set but are still worried about the door panel stuff, check out my website. I've included a very detailed description of what's involved with pics.
Click on 'Michelle', then 'modifications'. Let me know what you think about the instructions.

Just did the stereo UG today. Installed new speakers/50 watt amp (in the trunk). The stock speaks are absolute junk, 15 watters.
I did the replace door speaks w/Boston units and mounted the tweeters on the dash with foamy tape, no cutting involved. Sound is a 10-fold improvement but I need to cut the sound from the dash tweeters, too much hiss.

So, I'm lookin'for speakers too, and I am way too inept to add an amp or anything. All the specs for these things are totally confusing me.
What specification describes how much power a speaker draws? I would think something that draws less power will provide more volume, right?
So if price is no object (since they are all uner $200) and you want the best possible sound and volume from them, which ones would you get? Is 3-way better? Or does that require more power?
What about the Sony XS-V1655G?
What is the wattage of our current head unit?

I put in the Sony 1621's -- bought them locally at a discount audio retailer for a better price that I could find in any online or mail-order source. When I had connected one speaker, I played it together with the remaining one OEM speaker, and compared the two -- you wouldn't believe how much difference there was. After installing the second Sony, we just sat in the driveway listening to the miracle of good sound for about an hour! Still sounds good at speed, too.
The entire project was a piece of cake, about half an hour, and I'm not that handy. Anyone can do it.

Okay, I give up and I am ordering the Sony XSV 1621... but the web page is broken and gives me an error...
I've been on hold at Crutchfield for 10 minutes now... AGH!! After all this time, you would think people could make their web sites work!
