I've got to agree with the 'squares' in this thread. I've got a kicker solo baric and it's pretty loud! I couldn't afford an Eclipse sub either. What really sold me with the square was how little airspace it needs. It seemed as if we were destined to be together!

Hey Jason, I took the roof well out. It was rattling too much and it moves the sound to the front better. But to cover the spare and the gas tank I took a piece of black grill cloth and attached it to four screws and then stretched it out tight to make it look smooth. Unless you look really close into the back window, you can't tell the difference. Best of all, it was an 8 dollar mod! Just thought I'd let you know since you gave me the idea to take out the roof well.

How do you remove the back well?

Taking the roof well off isn't too tough, it only took me a long time because it's hard to get to. Basically just take a look back there and you'll see that it's held in place by a bunch of clips that you have to press the middle in of before you can pull them off. You also have to take the back piece of plastic off too. It'll all make sense when you're looking at it. When you take it out, expect to be putting the top up and down a couple of times to dissassemble different parts. I know I did.

have you seen the w7? it's a little large. a monster to be more precise... took two of us to get it out of the box cleanly... say good bye to trunk space... for my money, i agree with the boston pro sub... very musical - unless you want to sound like a kid going down the road thumping away.. then a lot of others come into play

Well, not necessarily all the trunk space has to go away, but a lot of it, yes. For under $500 IMHO the Boston, Infinity Kappa Perfects, or JL W3 or W6's are the best choice.
I'd like to point out though that there exist subwoofers that are capable of very tight, accurate, and musical bass at low and moderate volumes, that are capable of maintaining that sound quality (SQ) up into the high-volume (SPL) arena. By contrast many subwoofers, CV Strokers for instance, are designed to generate maximum SPL at the expense of SQ. I think these are what you normally assume are in the trunk of the "kid thumping down the road". Unlike these "SPL" subs, the Eclipse Titanium bogey originally mentioned is capable of both superb musical reproduction and high SPL output. While I still haven't heard or seen one, from looking at its specs I imagine a W7 would be as well. But we're no longer talking about a sub $500 setup...

So you can have your cake and eat it too, just don't expect to have enough money left over for a glass of milk...

anyone running an IDMAX?

I'm planning to get one. With a power handling spec of 1000 w RMS for the 12 and a db sensitvitiy of 94 db, this sub is suppose to rock in both SPL and SQ. $440 online I think.

I'd say it depends on what you're going to listen to. I've heard very few car subs playing music so...

My suggestion would be to go with what I put in the Maxima (but won't be moving to the S2000), an Alpine SBS254F. It's a combined 5-channel amp and sealed box sub. With music, it sounds fabulous. You won't win any "loudest car stereo contests" though.

Tim

P.S. The reason I won't be moving it to the S2000 is my contention that in this car a) the ambient noise level will be so high that you won't be able to hear the subtle things you're paying for in a high $$$ system unless you're parked (particulary in this car, the low frequency noise level is always going to be really high when moving), and b) the engine makes a song that I'd much rather listen to.
