Boston G510-4
Hey all-
I just got my Boston Acoustic G510-4 in today. I just installed it (to make sure it was working, and not a dud). Keep in mind, the box is 1.0CF (instead of the recommended .5CF), and it has not really been tuned yet. I am running a Hifonics Titan 8800 with channels 3/4 bridged for the sub (440wrms), the input set at 2V (to match HU output), the bass boost on the amp up 3/4, the bass boost on the HU at +10 (out of 15.....to match the boost level on the amp). The amp is crossed over at 80htz. Bass level on HU is +3 (out of 10) with the curve set on 80htz (with a "Q" of 2 on the 9851 HU). Subwoofer is set to SYS1 (as opposed to SYS2 that ups level at lower volumes). It was originally on SYS2 to get the most out of the Clarion, but it was just TOO loud down low.....it drowned everything out.
Initial impression....this sub is HEAVY!!! The packing slip noted the package was 29.0lbs. This sub is EASILY 2-3 times heavier than my starter sub (Clarion SW10x). Magnets are huge as well. Seems tightly put together (as all parts can be removed individually for repairs / replacement).
Upon installation, using the tune of the old sub, there is just no comparison. This thing is a beast. It hits SOOOO much harder, and is quite a musical sub (to what I can tell at this point). I played several different songs (to get a general feel of what the sub "likes" to play). It seemed to sound much better on songs with sustained bass-lines (Red Hot Chili Peppers "Parallel Universe" intro was AMAZING). Next up was some harder hitting stuff (Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc" and "Kids with Guns"). It definitely hit harder than the Clarion (duh!), but did not seem like it was quite at home. This might be a result of the box / lack of tuning, but it was equal for both types of music, so its not really a variable.
I will post again (probably over the weekend) when I get around to tuning the amp / packing in the box to the proper volume.
Any input as to this sub's strengths and weaknesses (that I can incorporate into my tuning).
Thanks
John

That is the main reason I got this sub.....impressive perfomance at a 4-ohm load.
Now all I have to do is finish installing the sub / packing in the box and tune the amp.
Should sound great
This is definitely a more musical sub than the Clarion.

John / Dave-
Any recommendations for a grill for this sub? The surround is too large for my old Kicker grill (protected surround on the Carion). I am looking for good protection, not really concerned about looks, just looking to prevent the cone from scratching like my Clarion.
I blocked the box in today, sounds considerably tighter. Now to find the sweet-spot on the x-over to make this thing hum. I have a feeling its probably going to be between the current 80htz and 100htz. I will also have to play with the Q contol as well.
Thanks

Well, the sub came with an MDF ring included (have not measured, but I think its for a grill, as its obviously not for mounting). I think I will order one of the grills Pikkashoe is using now...seems like a VERY tight weave. Max protect!
Not to mention, if I get some LED lighting put in, I can have the grill polished for some REAL bling!
