Default Car Alarm Kills Wi-Fi

I had a Clifford Matrix 10.5 installed yesterday. I added a proximity sensor as an option. Tonight, my Wi-Fi connection at home was constantly disconnecting while the signal strength fluctuated wildly. I tried everything to restore the connection with no success. Then I had an inspiration. My car is parked in the driveway about 15 feet from the wireless router's location inside the house. When I turned off the car alarm, the Wi-Fi connection was restored. I experimented some more and found out the proximity sensor was the culprit. (I had the alarm installer include a hard-wired switch to allow me to turn off the proximity sensor while still arming all the other sensors.) I may try using a different wireless channel on the router to see if that helps. And here I was blaming my computer.

it may or may not help.

wi-fi operates in the 2.4Ghz band. As long as the alarm maintains a CONSTANT channel, it should work. 2.4Ghz cordless phones hop frequencies, so wifi often won't work at all if you have one of those.

Hey Steven, my family lives in Melbourne, FL. We have a running debate about which is worse, hurricanes in FL or earthquakes here in CA. Hurricanes must be bad for soft tops, but at least you know they're coming.

Hurricanes arent that bad..... Unless you are RIGHT in the path (50 miles either way), you usually get minimal damage. Just a TON of rain, some flooding, some downed trees, and some missing power. We got hit by 3 last year (all glancing blows)..... Ivan, Jeane, and Francis. Nothing too horrendous. But then there are cases like Rita and Katrina (which were absolute WORSE case scenarios). It all depends on WHERE they hit.

As far as the prox. sensor screwing with the signal......I havent heard of that one yet....but I guess it is possible.

And with regards to the phone screwing with the Wi-Fi, I have 4 2.4GHTZ handsets running in my house, and ours works fine. I think it depends on what type of frequency you are running.......I have 802.11b (i think it was 802.11m that didnt work last time....it was another sub-branch of the 802.11 freq.). If you have to trade in routers, check out the new SRX technology.....supposedly helps out a TON.

can't say i'm surprised at all...

a few of us reported weird falsing on our in car radar detectors b/c the proximity detectors were always on, and were triggering the detectors. K band radar operates in the 24.1x Ghz range, though i recall getting mostly Ka falsing.

here's the thread on prox falsing:

and here's a little 'how prox detectors work' writeup
