Default Viper 500 Alarm Problems

I seem to be having issues with a Viper 500 alarm which the previous owner had installed. The alarm seems to be triggering itself for no apparent reason. At first I thought that maybe the sensitivity of the shock sensor was set too high so I turned it down but the problem still persists. I have litterally set the alarm, and stood in front of the car watching it for 3-5 minutes. At times, it will begin to chirp and eventually trigger. Other times, it seems to behave itself.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thanks for the help!

What sensor is tripping it?

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting four blinking lights after the alarm is triggered. Per the instruction manual, it is Zone 4 - Instant trigger (for optional sensors). I may be off base, but on an S, would that possibly be a proximity sensor?

First you need to figure out what sensor is tripping it. I'm not familiar with that specific alarm, nor your specific setup, so you'll need to do some detective work before I can offer suggestions.

It sounds as though the previous owner may have had a proximity sensor installed on your alarm to sense whether someone comes close to the car. These are tought to adjust and can have different "moods" as it were. There are two settings on them for interior and exterior sensing. They can also be effected when setting them up by flourecent lighting, if your top is up or down, hard top installed etc..

Thanks for the help thus far. After doing some more trouble shooting, I'm pretty certain that the sensor being tripped is a proximity/motion sensor.

Any suggestions on how to adjust this thing? Or is this a task a 'do-it-yourselfer' should probably stay away from...

Thanks again for all of your input.

You'll have to find where it's been installed. I placed mine in the center under the locked glove box where the trunk switch is. There isn't alot of room for one I guess it shouldn't be hard to find. Once you've found it, there's two POT adjustments on it. One for the outter area of the car, one for the interior.

I'm sure if you search the web, you'll find a generic data sheet on adjustments for a prox switch.

It may also be set up through the main controller by way of the remote... all depends on the actual sensor you're using.
