Default car speakers

sorry this is probably a stupid question but i want to be sure before i purchase some new speakers. these are the speakers that i want to get...

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-d9Zy2OiGO0O/c...00SPS171A&g=400

this is part of the instructions in exact words:

"Cut out the back of the plastic factory mounting bracket to provide enough depth for your new speakers"

just wondering would this be a problem or a lot of trouble? also, were would you guys suggest to put the tweeters without drilling a hole through the door panel?

thx in advance

You can either cut the plastic backing, or make a spacer out of MDF to replace the plastic piece. Here is a thread on how to do it.

As for the tweeters, maybe someone else can answer. I have them in my doors from the facotry.

The factory mounting bracket is there too protect speaker from water dripping down from window seal either from rain or wasjing the car. After you cut off the back of speaker baskets and use the rings to mount your new speakers you lost the water protection, you may want to get a pair XTC baffles and cut part of the back off and use it as umbrella to protect your speakers.

Is this your final decision on speakers? I listened to these Alpines in a store last night and wasn't very impressed. The Boston Acoustics sounded much more full, and sounded like they had better bass response.

That is the right size. Buy the slim 2-3/8" depth. When you install door speakers, it should be in the order: Door frame -> XTC baffle -> Speaker ring -> Speaker

Don't forget to cut out at least 1"x2" the bottom of the baffle to protect speaker from water dripping down, but allow speaker to breath.

I've never heard of this before...? Why should the speaker need to breathe? If there is no moisture trapped between the speaker and the baffle it should not be necessary.

EDIT: I read some reviews and it seems that the foam baffle actually limits bass response, prompting the need for a hole to be cut in the baffle. I'd stay away from these; they seem pretty useless...
