I just found software that will allow me to plug a Valentine 1 radar detector into my PC and control in from my touchscreen. It will also give the audible and visual indications exactly like on the V1 itself. This may allow for a stealth install of the V1.
If/when I get a V1, I will hook it up and report back my findings. Just thought I would share this as alot of people ask me different things that can be accomplished with the CarPC.
I live in VA and my friend and I want to get the V1. From what I have read, it can turn itself off when it detects radar...being that radar dectectors are illegal in VA, Its a nice feature.
Would you still need the little plug in part that shows where the radar is coming from?? Or does the software take its place(kind of sounds like it)??
The software actualy has an on screen arrow display setup that looks identicle to the arrows on the V1. So, I am thinking that if you can find a way to mount the V1 stealthily where it can still catch forward and rear signals, it would be able to be totaly hidden.

If thats the case that is extremely cool! I would be very interested in trying it.
Can you pm a link or a software name?
I am starting to update and relearn my carpc so I can get it back in. I am also looking for another radio door to start modifing for the screen.
I have been testing out my setup for a few weeks now and am pleased with the results. However I am making some significant changes. My first two carputers were made using mini-itx boards whcih are small and made for the car environment. These processors run cooler and use alot less power. This time, as I outlined above, I used a motherboard from a desktop that I had lying around.
The computer itself is running fine, but I am thinking about a few issues that MAY arise. One is heat. It is winter and generaly cool right now. When the trunk temps reach 120deg in the summer, I need a cool running PC. Two is space. I have quite a bit of room being eaten by the current setup, although it's managable. But, it leave no room for other stuff that I may want later.
So, I decided to go with the setup pictured below, which is what I have run in the past. It is a VoomPC case, made to look like an amplifier. The case has provisions for three fans to keep it cool. I then switched over to a Via MII10000 motherboard which is only 7"x7", 1ghz (plenty) and has a built in CF slot. The hard drive will be a 100gb laptop drive, I will reuse my memory and the M2ATX power supply I am already using. This way I won't have to worry about anything after this.
I have also ordered an external USB sound card. This will eliminate any EMI and noise from the system along with providing much more equalization capability.
Here is the assembled case. I layed the CD there for size comparison.
Here is a shot of the board and the power supply side by side.
