Coax vs Component Speakers
hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my stock speakers to either a component or coax set while using the alpine power pack bridged, so 90W to each. Already have an Alpine head unit. Might add a Sound Ordinance B-8PTD behind the passenger seat later. Not really trying to go all out here, only need a volume and quality bump.
After doing much research I have yet to find a solid answer on which speakers work best SPECIFICALLY for our cars, as thats what really matters. There are opinions on tweeters being too bright on components and opinions of losing the highs into your leg while using coax. I want to get a gauge of what most people are running and some opinions into one thread. I'd also love some speaker recs, anything under $500.

Coax means the woofer and tweeter are combined into one speaker assembly. Components have the woofer and tweeter separate, as in components.
Everyone's ears are different. Depending on if your S has the separate tweeter mount in the door I would always suggest components over coax. Components are better as it places the sound stage up higher in the cabin of the car.
There's a ton of information in this subforum about the different speakers people have chosen over the years, and their reasons why.

I can see what you mean about This Car. Woofers lose their umph with an open top, and theoretically that could allow the tweeters that are in your face to be more dominant than normal.
But I don't see that theory really playing out. If you have door tweeter space, use it. Component speakers > coax. Rule still applies.
You can add more bass later, with in cabin powered compact sub. I believe that is one of your stated options. There is a new Pioneer footwell sub that could work well. Can fit invisibly in place of the white passenger footwell foam under carpet (not in place of, but slotted into by cutting foam).
I can see where you want to stay mostly Alpine though. Understandable.

Brightness of a tweeter is generally due to the material the tweeter is made from, a metallic tweeter is typically brighter than a silk/soft dome. Silk/soft dome is always my go-to as they tend to be much less harsh.
The Alpine S-S65C components have a silk dome tweeter, if you're wanting to stick with Alpine those should be decent.

I think I'm gonna go with the morel maximo components. They seem to have the great reviews and a softer sound (textile dome) which works well for the music I listen to. That pioneer sub looks pretty interesting, will be on the look out for it. Thanks for the info
