Thumbs up Concerns, ideas, and pointers?

I am looking at what appears to be a common configuration: Alpine head unit (9853), Alpine Ipod interface, Modfry's DCI, Spods, and new component speakers up front and in the Spods. I am looking at adding usable volume with the top down at highway speeds, and descent radio reception. I might add an amp and subwoofers in the future, but am not looking at spending more than a grand or so at this time.

First question: Does it look like I am starting down the right path with this setup?

Second question: Any pointers on installing the equipment in a 2005? (I have installed head units in the past, but never on a brand new car )

The biggest concern I have is with the head unit. The first concern deals with the apparent difficulties that Alpine has had with it's motorized face plates, and the other is the fitment of the unit into a 2005 S2000. Acording to Crutchfields site this unit fits with "modification". Anybody have a say on how modified the unit or the car need to be?

Thanks for the help, and a big thumbs up to all of those who contributed to the FAQ. It was a great help.

Hey Eric, that sounds like a good start. I've very similar stuff in my '03. Even if you're not doing it now, i'd still plan on an amp or two down the road. A high power head unit will help, but regardless of what some others will tell you, it's still not going to be clear at 60 w/ the top down. I've gone through several interations of my system and finally have it to where it's clear at 80+ and it definately takes more than just a head unit.

Anyway, where in FL are you? I'm in Tampa and if you're nearby I'd be happy to show you what I've done and let you listen to it at speed if that'll help w/ your buying decisions.

Regards,
jc

iim not sure if the motorized face plate on your model is the same as teh 9855, but if it is, the face does fit. i have the 9855 with the ipod interface. since you have teh 05, its pretty easy to remove the oem hu. the procedure is almost teh same as the ap1s (00-03), BUT you need to remove the ceter console first. hope that helps

I am in Tierra Verde, southern tip of Pinellas county. I would love to meet somewhere (maybe on your side of the bay?) and check out your system. Did you install it yourself, or have someone local do it?

I did it myself. I'm definatley not an audio guru or anything so it took way longer and was way messier than it should've but it turned out pretty well in the end. I'm very familiar w/ your location as i drive through there to take my seadoo to Ft. Desoto (although i'm not driving my S then).

Drop me a PM sometime if you want to get together. I'd be happy to pass along any pointers i can.

Regards,
JC

It is crystal clear at 90mph with top down in my car. Just turn bass down, pump up volume, and fade to the S-pods. Sounds great. Clear lyrics and guitar.

I am in Tallahassee, but will be in Tampa (MacDill and Kennedy) not this upcoming weekend, but next weekend. I also have a 10" sub in the tool well and XM radio.....no iPod adapter (yet). Some guy on eBay sells them for like $150 shipped (sub box). Looks pretty good.
