Considering this system
After more auditioning of speakers I am going with:
Alpine ida-x100 (with cable for iPhone)
Diamond audio S600s (front)
Diamond audio S500s (SPODS)
(thanks Neutered Sputniks!)
Alpine pdx-5
Subwoofer????
I am still thinking of a passenger footwell location possibly an 8" Pioneer premier shallow mount??? in a custom fiberglass/wood enclosure that I would make.

If you can wait, Stereo Integrity is going to have a 10" shallow mount out in a few months. $150 or so (rumored price range).
Check out the forums, look for the "BM" model:

On the other hand, their new 12" Mags are arriving at the shop Monday, with pre-ordered Mags shipping Mon/Tues. They still have a few that haven't been spoken for - Can't beat the price/performance ($250)

It's not about "more than you need." It's about what frequency range you want to hit. A 12 will hit lower freqs than a 10, and a 10 will hit lower freqs than an 8. Most 8's don't really even get into the true "subwoofer" freq ranges. You can find 8's as loud as 12's. And you can tune your 12 to be as "little" as that 8 you were thinking about.
You will definitely be missing the low notes with an 8". Also I don't see a point to the Pioneer Premier slimline subs; they made the baseline Pioneer slimline subs with IDENTICAL specs, and just slapped the name "premier" on it and raised the price. So, if you're going Pioneer, just go with the base model slimline. For a 10", I haven't seen a sub with it's performance in such a small form factor. 3" mounting depth, but more importantly, it only sticks out 1/2" above the mounting surface. Most slimline subs stick out more.
