Default Is Crutchfield Correct in their advice

I have an 03 and just got off the phone with Crutchfield about replacing my head unit and speakers with the idea of adding an amp and sub later. They said to ignore the tweeters in my door and get a good set of 6 1//2 to replace the other. Not sure what to do. Can anyone give me some ideas.

Um...I suggest investing in a quality HU and a quality set of components for the doors. Plenty of info in this forum (currently 2-3 different upgrade discussions within the top 10 threads here), look around

How much are you looking to spend?

I was figuring to spend about $500 to start. I am upgrading the HU, and the parts from Modifry and thought the way you do, but they were sending me in another direction.

Well, the car does have 6.5" speakers in the doors... were they suggesting that you just go with coaxial speakers (tweeter mounted "on" the midrange, generally with no crossover) given your budget and intention to power with an amp? It's not terrible advice, though if you intend to add an amp down the road, I'd suggest you get the components now. They'll still sound good with the HU power, but an external amp will get more out of them.

Look for sensitivity ratings above 90db. Some models are around 94 these days. Sensitivity is a measure of how efficient a speaker is, or how loud it will play given a certain level of power. As the scale is logarithmic, a 10db difference is 2x the loudness. Assuming you didn't already know all that.
