To cut or not to cut...
Please do PJK...I would like to know just for the hell of it. I do know that my 6.5" Eclipse are supposed to be slightly oversize, so you could be correct.
Makes sense anyway...you would not want a 6.5" cutout for a 6.5" speaker, it would fall through.
I would like to hear if anyone else has installed 6.5's in an 04 without having to cut.

Hm, I just got 6.5" Bostons installed in my MY04. Now a shop did do it, so I guess it's possible that they cut the sheet metal, but I told them I wanted to know if they were going to do anything non-reversible and they were really good about running even minor stuff elsewhere in the car by me. I think PJK3 might be right about the opening size.
In any case, nice work on your install.

oh -- make no mistake... i think he did a fantastic job in getting that speaker in there w/ the least amount of permanent modification! very clean work... and i really liked the Eclipse components i have heard in the past... so, kudos on the whole deal...
i'm just trying to put some sense into the whole 5.25" mystery change that 'might' have happened.
btw, just thought of something Kronos --
while a bit after the fact, you may want to purchase some touchup paint, and go back in there and paint over all the exposed metal areas, so you don't develop rust down in there over time.
in fact, you really don't even need touchup paint, but it would be a nice touch...

I am a little lazy and not a good handyman, I've almost always breaking anything I tried to fix. The only thing I can do is to buy the right speakers: correct sizes, good sound and do not cost an arm. Then find a good installer to do the difficult work.
I think that the larger sizes of the same speaker lines usually have better sound quality than smaller sizes, i.e., Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 sound better than 5.1, and it can be cheaper too. But the problem is the space availlable for installation may allowed only smaller one.
So far, it looks like MY04 can use 6.5" door speakers, but it may needed to do some light modifications for some brands. The rear speakers are limited to 5.25" only. And there is some minimum pre-wired for the rear speakers, no need to run speaker's wire all the way to OEM Head Unit.
Am I correct in the speaker sizes ? Please tell me before I make an order.
Thanks you all and have a great day.

I think you are right about the opening being the same. I compared the pics of both yesterday and they sure looked the same to me. I think it would be highly unlikely that Honda would make a change like that for no real reason.
On a related note, now that I've had the car for a month or so and have begun to use the stereo a bit (just had to listen to the engine by itself for the first few weeks
), this stock system really is just woeful. I bought a couple new CD's last night and I almost didn't want to play them

Thanks for your advices, Willie.
I am thinking about Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 for the front and 5.1 for the rear.
IKESOUND.com sells 6.1 for $209 but $220 for 5.1 plus shipping. Installations cost about $200-$300 for a total about $750-$800.
Is this too much money just to add rear speakers and upgrade front speakers ?
If the music does not sound as good as expected, then the next steps will be new Head Unit and external amp(s), then subwoofer(s) after that, then ...

*confirmed*
my OEM crapola paper cone speakers are exactly 6.25" across on the bracket and 5.25" across the cone... same as Kronos' speakers.
and i definitely got a 6.5" Focal in there... (which is a large speaker w/ a VERY deep magnet.)
final word -- NOT a 5.25" speaker in the MY04 S2000's they are still 6.5" speakers...
i wouldn't be too worried or embarrassed, it's an easy mistake to make.
