Just out of interest, are you guys over complicating this thing?

Wouldn't it be fairly simple to make a small circuit with nothing more than some resistors and transistors which could read which of four buttons are being pressed, then trigger a closed circuit through another resistance that matches a command from the Sony remote?

You could use surface mount potentiometers to allow for variance, 4 LEDs for testing/tuning purposes, and all components would set you back about $5.

Is this possible?

My implementation goes at it using simple components rather than trying to convert it to a digital signal and then back to analog on output. Recognizing the button is the easy part, reproducing the simulated button is the hard part because the rest of the circuit modifies the output. I've tried output using transistors and it won't work for sony because the transistor changes the current. I've tried simple tests to simulate the Sony button with one transistor and one resistor and the button isn't recognized when it should be. So it is a little more complicated than just reproducing the same resistance.

Part of my reason for making it more complex is so that I can add additional functionality. I am designing mine so that it can recognize each button, but can also tell the difference between the button being pressed, or the button being held down for a second or more. This way I will be able to get more than 1 function out of each button. I hope to have more time to work on this and finish it up in the next three weeks or so. Lots more details and pics when I am done.

OK, S2KMan and almilli -- did this ever actually get done? Or did life and realities interfere to the point it didn't and isn't going to? I would perfectly understand, but OTOH, if you either did or are going to do this, I'd sure like to get my hands on one. I've got a working PAC unit replacement, but it doesn't quite do everything I need it to -- I can have either mode or source, but not both and the way the Sony does things, you need both.

I was real close to getting it done. But now I'm in Hawaii for a while and my s2k is in California. So if someone hasn't figured it out by the time I get back, I'll probably resume the project. But at this time I have no clue as to when that would be.

I can't give you guys any help except to become a happy buyer if you guys succeed!.

I am currently deciding between an alpine and sony es head unit... If you guys get a working solution that bypasses the use of IR remitters, you will make it an easy decision and will make ma a happy guy!

Keep it up, I am sure there's a lot of s2k owners out there that will buy it!

Yes, I'm hoping S2KMan will finish the project as well. I've certainly got a "good enough" solution with the PAC, but there is so much more that could be done.

Hmmmm. Looks like S2Kman hasn't posted in quite a while here. Wonder what's up with him? I'm going to send off an email to see what's happening.

Just got an email from S2Kman. He's been out of town on an extended contract and is just getting back into doing this interface, but he IS committed to doing it and is now working on it again. Hopefully he'll have something shortly.

Sounds familiar. That's the reason I'm out of town right now also.
