Woodson to be fair he does have a point that the sound does change with each of those subtle differences.
But thats about the only thing he has a valid point on.
Kenwood making good speakers? hahaha.

Woah...as PJK3 alluded to, yes I've actually heard a few speakers in my time...Excelons being among them
Now that we've got that out of the way, have you heard Seas Excel or Morel drivers? How about Vifa PL drivers? How about Tang Band (underhung neo)?
I have. (Either in my own installs or in the case of the Excel, in an install I did in a friend's truck)
And they all make a better mid--the first two laughably better for a bit more money, the next one much better for the same money, and the last one somewhat better for way less money ($20 for a pair)

) up to 105 dB.Don't worry about me. I've done my research and my testing

Oh...and that newest Excelon line has been in the stores since June (The Good Guys made a big deal about it) so yes, I've heard it

not at all. My Kenwood collection is just the result of lack of other options.
- i was looking for 6' midbass to put to doors and purchased Kicker r6b (or what is exact name). I blew one quickly plus it had very pure performance. The remaining vendor was Kenwood with W1705 - what a difference (!). More rich, more bass, more everything. Just the price was lower:-)
- fosgate 3way setup was considered but I heard other (good) fosgates in a showroom and didn't like them as much as I did excelons. Plus they are quite deep, especially for dash setup.
Note - there are two lines of excelons. I am talking about the new ones. So - have you heard the new ones?

i will do this though... i cannot guarantee that i've heard the 'new' Excelons... the last pair i heard was a while ago, and i was enthusiastically underwhelmed. so, on my way home i'll stop and listen to the best Excelons i can find... i have two dealers that 'can' be on my way home, and i'll stop at both if possible and give them a listen...
There is a difference naturally... But the sound is not mummed anymore and I can listen to quiet parts of 'wish you were here' still recognizing all the music. Remember - the windshield acts as a reflector and since my dash speakers produce 100hz-20khz (hi pass) the sound getting to me is more rich then if I would have speakers by my knees. Especially with the top down. Now the speakers behind my seat added some (low end) since they are 6'' and produce naturally more rich sound then in-dash 4''.
I honestly don't see the advantage. Of course I can't hear what you hear, I'll take your word for it.
The sound coming after deflection from the windshield has to fight the same wind/noise that a speaker in a kick panel would. However, the kick panel speaker is (sort of) firing directly at your ears so it's going to loose less compared to the dash mounted speaker. There will also be less phase collision issues with a kick panel setup.
Then again, car audio is sort of black magic so whatever works for you is what really maters.
Enjoy the tunes!
