Disable horns when locking car
I searched through this forum and the entire site, but could not find a definitive solution to my problem. I bought a new '08 a couple months ago, and foolishly let the dealer talk me into installing the Karr alarm. The remotes that came with the car are the Honda remotes, with Lock, Unlock, Trunk, and Panic buttons.
When I unlock the car, the horn sounds twice, and when locking, horn sounds once. I would really like to disable this feature, but can't make any of the suggestions I found work. Some said to press the Lock and Unlock for either 3 or 5 seconds- that doesn't work. Others said to press the Lock and the Trunk buttons for either 3 or 5 seconds - that doesn't work either. A couple of posts said that if I have the dealer-installed alarm, they should have given me different remotes with an Oprion button, and thrown the factory ones away (this may apply only to earlier model cars).
When I leave the house in the morning, it's really early. I like my neighbors, and would rather not piss them off with my "beep-beep" every morning!
Has anyone with a later model car and the dealer-installed Karr alarm been successful at re-programming the alarm, or finding some way to keep the horns from honking?
As always, your replies are much appreciated.

They might have installed a seperate alarm horn with the added alarm. You sould look under the hood for the added horn. If you really don't want to hear it you can clip the wires and just remove the horn. I would say half the alarms that I have installed the clients didn't want the horn installed.
Or you could take it to a local car audio shop and have them re-program it.

called and they said to put the key in, turn to on (not starting the car), and then press the button 3 times. so i did this and it got worse: added an extra beep to each activation!!!
so i drove to the dealer. "did you to do that with the door open or closed?"
WTF
isn't someone going to get in the car and close the door out of habit! so anyway, i guess if you do turn to on, leaving the car door open, press the alarm button 3x, it will stop with the horn honking. i didn't actually witness them do this since the sales guy drove my car back to the alarm guy.
but my alarm still works: blinking light is on, and i tested it during a car wash and it still honks when ****ed with. yet, on and off (leaving the car and entering the car) no longer honks the horn. perfect.
hope the technique works for you.
OEM, you can disable the honk with the OEM fob.. Aftermarket, I'd just clip the horn wires i you have an extra horn, but be careful if thats the alarm siren. Fwiw, my aftermarket alarm is wired to the OEM horn.
thruxton, thanks much for the procedure. When you say "alarm button" are you talking about the little button (mine's blue) on the alarm module under the dash near the driver's knee? I think they refer to it as the valet button.

1. key in, car to on (not pressing start though)
2. keep your car door open
3. press that valet button 3 times
4. turn the key to off*
my alarm is on but no honking for activation or deactivation.
* this is how it was explained to me, as like i said, i tried it at home with the door closed and it won't work but they told me that is how the dealer alarm guy did it

One note small note: After following your instructions my car would honk once (after pushing the valet button 3 times), but the honking persisted. I tried this process with the key in the ACC position (not turned to run) and after pushing the valet button 3 times, the car honked twice and then honking was disabled.
Whew, thank you!
