Default Ditching the passive crossover?

This may be a dumb question...

What are the str/weakness of ditching a component speakers passive crossover and say using a four channel amp's crossover programming instead? In other words say I have a nice component set and a four channel amp. I wire the tweeters directly to channels 1 and 2 and the midrange to 3 and 4. Good? Bad? Problems?

good. you'll get more control over which speakers get what frequencies. also, the passive xover has a net impedance of 4 ohms (right?). thus, both speakers essentially split the power. if you wire them independently, each speaker will get the same amount of power as the component set got with the passive xover as the 4 ohm load is the same.
