Funny how long some threads keep going. I just installed my new polks 6501's today using this diy. TY TY helped big time. First speaker took two hours as i am a perfectionist...everything had to be triple checked. The second speaker took 40mins. Following this thread was so helpful. I installed a new hu two weeks ago which made unbelievable sound improvement. a sony mex bt3900u...i wanted an Alpine but it would not stream Bluetooth music without a 125 dollar add on. Well i couldnt be happier with the sony, it does everything i want and sounds awesome. I can get into my car with my droid in my pocket not even playing music and turn on my car hit play and it starts playing music that i have on my droid....i do not have to touch anything on my phone. I have an amp coming next week but i think i will save it and use it with a sub woofer as the components sound loud and crystal clear without an amp. The mids are tight not boomy with the polks so if you want big base get a sub. The stock speakers had more boomyness then the polks but you had major distortion with them.
I have a dbls meter and was playing music hitting 96 to 100 dbls with no distortion. why amp that..save it for the sub.
Just my opinion.. Anybody else have a dbl meter running higher then 100?
Thanks again for this diy.

Going to wake this great old thread up again.

Ordered my db6501's today and just wanted to know, I'm going to swap my head unit out as well, Something with at least 22wrms per channel but never going to put an amp on my car. Should I be running new speaker wire up to the new head unit, or has the original speaker wire (I'm 2002 model) worked fine for everyone?

Thanks.

Wonderful how to! I wish all of the pictures worked, but otherwise it was very educational. I'll reference it directly when I install my Focals in the next week or so.

Amazing write-up indeed. Any possibility on getting those pictures back up? I'll be referencing this directly for my MM6501!

Doing this install today. I have the same speakers. Hopefully a big improvement over stock.

I'm running a JVC EXAD KD-AVX33 (love JVC HUs, about the only thing JVC got right)

I installed my polks yesterday. This writeup was a big help. The newer db6501 don't fit into the stock basket perfectly, but I just marked and drilled new holes at an angle and it holds the speakers just fine. I also added the ktp to my alpine headunit and overall I'm fairly satisfied. All thats left is to put a sub in the trunk.

Where did you end up mounting the KTP? Thank you

I put it inside the dash on the passenger side, and used some 3m tape to stick it to the cover. It hasn't moved an inch.

I have an 05 so I'm not sure if this would work on the later models.
