DIY: How to install component Speakers!
good write up. I installed a set of POLK component speakers in an 04 and was able to use the OEM baskets by using a dremmel tool to creat a hole( at a very slight angle) to screw into the OEM speaker basket. I like the design of that basket to assist with keeping anything that makes it into the door(weather strip by window). Also installed an aftermarket head unit and 2 amps in this car. FYI, before running the amps and speaker wires from those amps, I hooked everything up through the factory wiring. Remarkable difference with the power output ofthe aftermarket headunit VS the OEM headunit. The headunit is installed with a gobetween harness t ojust plug n play. Most aftermarket head units put out 40/channel VS the OEM headunit being 25/channel. To wire the amps I ran entirely new speaker wire to the trunk into the doors and bypassed the factory wiring. I did not want to cut anything in order to allow an easy re-install of all of the OEM stuff, if needed. This installation included the installation of the Modifry DCI(wired) which works GREAT.
Did another install on my 2001 and added the OEM tweeters to the top area of the door panel and also added aftermarket tweeters to the lower portion of the door panel. Huge improvement. Also as with the 2004, the difference from an OEM headunit going to the aftermarket was huge. This car got all Alpine components, headunit and speakers. Did an IR Modifry DCI in this car, only issue with that is there being so little area on the radio door bezel to keep the IR sensor far enough out to get a signal to the radio. I put a peice of aluminum tape on the radio door so that while closed the tape would reflet the signal to the radio, works perfectly.. I also have an Alpine amp that will be hooked up this coming weekend

Based on the speakers installed and their measurements, I gather that there is 2" of depth inside the OEM Honda speaker basket. Anyone know how much room if you cut a hole in them? Looking to put JL C-5 6.5" components. They are 2.5" and I ordered a set of half in spacers. Should I use the spacers or cut out the basket? Or maybe both?
If I cut out the back of the baskets, should I put some Dynamat behind it?

Great writeup. I've only had my car a week and I was able to complete this upgrade in about the 2hrs that you said and had a cider (don't drink beer) along the way. My Kaption components are much better than the 'el cheapo Pioneer 3way's the previous owner had in the car. They were so beaten up and physically bad there was no wonder why they sounded like stock. Now I have realized I will need to change the oldschool jvc headunit as it's not the best and probably is from 2004 like the car. Nevertheless this was a great mod and a good start.
Thanks again

That is a good point however not the end of the world IMO. My speakers did not have the basket when I removed them (previous owner) and there weren't any issues due to water etc on them.

, unless it my computer not wanting to show them
