Does alpine 9857 work with NEW Ipod (classic)?
short story: been using 5th generation ipod with 9857 - works well
ipod goes a bit crazy, now there is 6th generation / "ipod classic" out (in 80 and 160gb models)
anybody know for a fact whether those are compatible with alpine 9857?

NO...NO...NO...NO...
Check the Apple message board...the new "Classic" is a completely different machine. Even the old video cables from Apple won't work on the new machine...the new name for iPod classic...iPos!!!

This is why I hate the internet...too many damn "facts"
160GB iPod Classic works well with Alpine iDA-X001 after enabling disk use.
It works!!! It works!!! I am so happy right now! My sister said this earlier and I'm glad I tried it.
YOU HAVE TO ENABLE DISK USE
Then I read this....
I read that enabling disk use worked for some of you to get the USB working with your nre Classic. I've enabled that and I still get a USB Device error when connecting via USB.
I called Alpine tech support just now and they stated that only the high speed cable will work with the Classic Ipods. That would mean no album art, page skip searching and the back feature will always take the search to the very top of the list. I'm bummed.
Some of this....
[I]I just bought a 160gig Ipod and have also tested it with my Alpine X001. It does work OK, but I am having problems with my album art showing up grainy (very low resolution). I

Here is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth:
*Called Alpine USA tech support, tech confirms that "new" ipod including Ipod Classic and Ipod Nano ARE COMPATIBLE WITH 9857 (and i assume the rest of that year's line)
*After work I BOUGHT AN 80GB Classic AND CONFIRMED IT THIS MORNING. No disk use enabling, no change of settings, no tricks... plugged it in and it works just like the "old one"
(remember this is for ALPINE IPOD FULLSPEED implementation, not necessarily with iDa-X001 USB / KCA-422a / whatever)

I found out that the 5th gen (and older) I-Pod units use an "unlocked" data transfer but that the new classic units are different regarding data transfer. I need to amend my "Yes" response to a I shouldn't have responded without all the facts. Sorry if I added to the confusion.
I have the 9857 with a full speed cable and am waiting on getting a new I-Pod classic until the dust settles.
