I only drive as fast as I think I can do safely, typically 15 or so over the limit and I lost count long ago of how many tickets my detector has saved me.

A radar detector is no guarantee of avoiding a ticket, but I wouldn't drive without one.

Are radar detectors legal in Canada? I thought they were not allowed north of the border.

If you are on more of a budget, the Passport 7500 is also a good option. The V1 is nice because you get the directional arrows, but the 7500 is still a nice detector for the money.

That said, the effectiveness of a radar detector depends on where you live and how the police operate. Here in MD (at least the parts I drive) most speed traps tend to be laser and the cops hide just over a crest in the road. With laser there is little to know warning because there isn't much scatter.

However, if you live in a place where the police can't afford laser then a detector is very effective.

The most important thing is to watch your mirrors. A lot of people get busted speeding because they aren't watching and a cop gets behind them and just starts pacing them.

V1 is the best. It saved me many many times. That said, I was also busted once on the PA Tpke by a trooper hiding behind some trees in the median. It won't save you 100% of the time, so you'll still have to keep your eyes open.

Escort is what I have and love.

It detects and tracks multiple signals...if you are getting hit by 2 diff K bands, you see them both. Helps you identify signatures that are out of place (in an area that has K as part of the 'natural' environment). This would also let you see two cops back to back on road ahead.

Laser is tougher. I have been saved by laser detector, but was from backscatter on cars in front of me. Cop was on the left side of road, as was I, and he hit a car about 100 yard in front of me so I was in alignment to catch part of the signal. Generally, if you detect the laser, it has detected you (since it is tightly focused point). However, lasers do not work well for cops in rain or even slight fog.

Detectors DO help you...BUT they are just another technique and tool. I also watch cars in front of me around corners, over hills. They see a cop and instant reflex is to tap breaks (even if they are not speeding). Use their eyes to your advantage. If you see folks suddenly moving to right lane up ahead that's another signal. Truckers slowing down (where they have been pushing previously) is yet another. Use eyes forward and backward for odd car profiles and behavior.

Cruise (not pass) in right lane when you can. This has saved me twice. If you and another guy are doing 80 over a hill side by side, the cop is more likely to nail the guy in the passing lane (theory being that he is going faster than you, or if the cop cannot tell which car 'pinged' the speed measurement, he will assume the car in the passing lane was going as fast or faster).

The upside is that a detector can HELP (not prevent) you from getting nailed, the downside, is that when you do get popped, having a detector is kinda like telling the cop that you are trying to play him. He is much less likely to give you a warning. I have gotten several warnings in the past, but none of them occurred when I had my detector going. I have had two cops specifically say something when they see the detector "didn't help you much, did it".

Donate 20 bucks to the state troopers and local municipality FOP to get those 'booster' stickers for your car visible from behind. Send a signal that you love cops, support them, and vote for pay raises.

Use all techniques at your disposal to improve your odds.

I am thinking get one radar detector if nesseccary..But I don't know if that thing works? If it coule help( at least I don't need to be worry about the getting speeding ticket next time), then I would like to hear which brand and model you guys currently use and worked as well. ALso I would like to know which brand got the higher reputation on Radar detector manufactories.
Radar detectors will save you tickets if you learn how to use them.. if you are coming over a hill and you are the only one, it's bad news..

I have a Whistler and it works just fine for me.. it detects all the bands and laser.. I only paid $85 for it, at BB, and I like it because I get different alerting sounds for the different bands being used.. plus it's not real expensive and performs very good.. I would love to have a cordless... but I'm not going to spend that kind of money for a detector... plus it's been proven that the cordless ones don't perform as well as the others.. the expensive ones, like Escort, are proven to perform better, but, for the price difference to performance difference, its not worth it in my view..

here's a link that rates a group of detectors.. hope it helps
