In order to get that many mp3's, why not just buy the iPod 60-80G? 60Gig is only $349 now. Not to mention, it is re-writable.

I saw the JVC KD-DV5100 on cruthfield's site for $300. It has:

Giga MP3. Using your computer and appropriate software, you can burn up to 100 hours of MP3s or WMAs on a single recordable DVD, and the KD-DV5100 will play them

The Alpine Catalogue lists a DVA-9965. It details DVD-MP3, DVD-Video, and DVD-R/RW.

The deck is an "ampless design."

It also states: "Available Summer 2005." June 22 is start of summer, right?

I've been in search for this over a year. To be exact, I am looking for a DVD in-dash head-unit (HU), without a screen, that can play MP3 music files recorded in DVD-ROM format on a DVD-R or DVD+R media. I tried these without success:

Panasonic CQ-DVR592U
Alpine DVA-7996
Pioneer DVH-P5000MP
JVC KD-DV5000
Boss DVD7000
Blaupunkt DVD-ME3

Lately, some minor noname brand HU's start appearing on EBay that claim this feature. One of them, made by Emerson model DV-X2205, is supposedly do this. But, I cannot find anyone locally who sells this brand so that I cay try.

This is mind-boggling to me for the fact that the DVD HU's all can read DVD and they all play MP3 on CD-R. All they have to do is to disable the the restriction without any hardware requirement to support this feature, yet no major car audio manufacturer is doing that. I am convinced that this is just a marketing restriction or a brainless oversight because some cheap home DVD decks and a portable DVD player (SONY MPD-AP20U) already support this.

Anyone, please post if you have any information on this! If you have a deck that you think that may work, please PM me. I can send you DVD's with MP3 to try.
the DVA-7996 does it partially. it cannot read folders, and for some reason, only up to a certain number of mp3's. when i had one before, i burned a dvd with 350 songs on one folder and about 20 songs in 4 other folders.

when i popped it into the 7996, it played up to about 280 songs.

to the original poster, my JVC KD-avx1 does it. i have a few dvds with about 800 songs each.

i am sure the JVC arsenal KD-adv6160 does it as well. when i was sales repping for JVC, i had a chance to play with this deck before it was released. pretty solid deck also. dont get the kd-dv5100, the build quality on it is not up to par. the Arsenal version is a much more solid deck.

Alpine has a DVA-9860 available this summer. This is single DIN classic face design that will play DVD audio and video. It MSRPs for $500.

Drawbacks - It only has 2V pre-outs and only the internal amp only rates at 16w RMS

The screen is small and probably won't show the many files a DVD could fit very well.

When it comes out I'm going to find out if a separate screen will display information during DVD audio play on top of just the video.
