sounds like an acceptable solution to me. about the only thing i'd be worried about is clearing the hinge of the trunk... *shrug*

the thought had occurred to me as well, but i figured William knows what he's doing...

i've added some pictures (i need to get a better light, this one is too yellow).

http://www.digitalcreep.net/~minhi/E8A/E8A.html

some notes...

--flush mounting the woofer looks way better then not doing it. the driver rim sits almost 3/4 of an inch above the mounting baffle.

--the woofer diameter is 8.5 inches. watch out with some grills! the kicker grill barely lines up with the edge of the cutout. the cutout cannot be much bigger then 8.5 inches! notice my edge has a slight bullnose (from a lot of hand sanding to get the circle just right) I have barely enough material to screw into!

--distance from the grill teeth to the woofer is about 28mm, distance from grill to rubber speaker surround is about 25mm, so clearance is good.

good luck, hopefully i'll power it up tomorrow

do u guys think that a jl 250/1 will be enough power for this sub? many people say that the 250 is underrated but what are your opinions.

I think it would be more than enough.

well, taking this out of PM and just updating those who might care...

William has my sub as of today and is putting everything together on it now... i still wish i could have pawed and gawked at this thing, but i'm going to grab these stills and save them for when people want to know what's inside the beast...

still no clear idea about grills, but mgiang7 - your solution looks really nice. the flush mount has a really nice look. it's hard to tell, but did you do the grill in silver? it makes a nice contrast to the speaker... and yikes is that box tiny!

and a 250/1 should be plenty for this sub... especially if the JL is slightly underrated. mgiang7 and i are putting a lot more to this sub, but we're both pushing the upper limit of it's handling capabilities.... i don't exactly remember what SC's plans are yet...

William will probably have ours powered up tomorrow... i'm hoping he'll post some quick thoughts on it after he's run it for a while... if i remember his previous posts -- i think he runs a JL 250/1 himself...

here's hoping my 450+Wrms doesn't overdrive it...

hmm how are you going to mount the grill? lift blocks? the 8 inch kicker doesn't fit over the rubber surround of the speaker!

OMG! (*faints*) *THUD!*

William, that looks absolutely fantastic...

"The sound is crisp, natural and deep." WOOOT!!! for all practical purposes -- we bought these things blind, just based on some reviews and 'net rumor'. it's good to know the gamble seems to have paid off...
how does it compare in sound quality to the JL stuff?

i suspected as much about the recessed approach in the trunk hinge... i know from previous pics various people have posted that it is a tight fit to that hinge...

bending the tines William? yikes.... be careful w/ that heat, as i'd hate to hear you burned yourself from your efforts for us... still, in practice - it's a feasible solution, but you are correct about forging a cast item...

i could pull out some of my materials books and see what i could find about heat treating/forging aluminum and relative temps... shall i?

as for my current prep efforts, i'm building my amp rack which is coming along better than expected. of course, i'm making some compromises i'm not thrilled about (due to the size of my amps and the curve in the tool well, i can only get a good mount on 3 of the 4 feet of the amps.), but it's ticking along well, and i'm going to do my first test assembly in a moment, then put finishing materials on... then, it will just be running the 4 gauge power, moving my interconnects, installing the distribution blocks, and screwing it all down... lots to do...

THANKS WILLIAM for the pics and update!

Actually running a 500/1 at about 50-60% (its mounted on the wall behind and right up against the passenger seat and runs ice cold - beautiful amps the JL's).

Installed one of the E8A's and fired it up this evening:

Lookin' good! I can't wait. I really need to make up my mind on the whole amp thing. I can't decide on if I want to get a PG Tantrum 600.4 and just run everything off it (75W x 2 for fronts, plus 300W bridged for the sub), or just run the memphis 500D that I already have with the gains turned down.
