everybody's got a sub in their trunk
Well....there you go....go for the WLAURENT then.....The elementals are great, just give it juice. I dont know much about JL, but I think it would be good at 2 ohm, not sure about 2. Plus, is the Elemental DVC or a single coil??? Maybee someone with more JL knowledge can chime in.
Hm, JL Audio's page claims 150W, 3-8ohm when bridged. That doesn't sound too good for the ED sub. Any suggestions on a better (small) amp for the sub... or maybe a better sub for the amp/enclosure?
the Elemental Designs sub is a 4 ohm DVC sub. JL subs run a bit more efficiently than the ED sub (which is a power hog).
now, if you're planning to JUST use the JL amp to power the ED sub -- the 300/4 is a great choice. you could bridge it to a 150 x 2, then send 150 to each voice coil.
other than that, i'm not sure what other subs to really go for, as i just have experience w/ the ED in WLaurents enclosure.
regarding subs -- what kind of budget are you looking at? and are you planning to use it to power anything but the sub?

Oh, ya I was planning on using the 300/4 to drive the Boston components and then use the other 2 channels bridged (or not?) for the sub. Maybe I should go with the JL sub in this case. But if the ED sub is much better and there's an amp I can use that won't take up an immense amount of space I'd consider that. Wlaurent himself suggested possibly the Xtant 403A?
Budget? I dunno, I'm mostly concerned with getting something that sounds good although I don't want to go too insane. But I also don't want to cheap out if there's something much better I could get. Much like choosing the S2000 itself...
I work in high-end home hifi for a living, but I really have no clue about what's out there in car audio and the shops I've been to usually only have a couple of performance oriented brands to listen to. Listening to component speakers has been the most interesting as it was pretty easy to listen to lots and narrow down to what I liked. With amps, HUs and subs, pretty much each store had one or two options and none seemed to have any opinions on them really -- although one guy claimed that the JL amp was better at dealing with more variable voltages that smaller cars like the S tend to produce.

here's one of the main threads... we talk more about the Xtant on page 2... but you can go back to 1 to get it from the start...
nice guy, but not so know how for audio...

Going back to the topic of this thread, I would never want to put a sub in the passenger footwell. Could you imagine your poor passenger when you wanted to listen to your music loud? You'd think it was a good volume and he/she would be pluggin thier ears....bad idea IMO
Just finished reading that thread with you helping out that guy who ended up with the Xtant, PJK3. Haha, that was quite a diagnosis session -- I had to laugh when I got to the smiley rave when you guys finally got it working right.
After reading that, that amp/sub combo is sounding good. So:
- Alpine CDA-9815 (that EQ presets feature still sounds too cool to me, but maybe I'm being silly)
- Xtant 403a
- ED e8a sub in wlaurent box
- Boston Rally component speakers
- DJ Qube dash controls
- maybe iPod interface into the Alpine's aux or changer input
I'm pretty excited. Has anybody else gotten this Xtant and have anything to say about it? It almost sounds too good to be true... great sounding, high power, drives the ED sub, and about half what I was even planning on spending on an amp. When I google for reviews on it, I get one (positive) at carreview.com and um... that same s2ki thread you just mentioned.
