Default Extending system power wire

I was wondering is it bad to extend system wires such as my amp power wire and speaker wires? I want to relocate my amp but the wire is too short so i was wondering if i extend the wire is that bad? Will there be any power loss? My friend was telling its not good to do that cause there will be power loss. Please let me know. TIA

How far? A few feet is probably no big deal regardless. When you extend wires that are borderline too small for what you're doing already, that's when you start to lose signal. What you're talking about certainly isn't going to break anything if that's what you're wondering.

A good measure to know how much you're going to lose by extending wires is the voltage drop. Try this calculator:
http://www.bcae1.com/wire.htm

If it says you're ok, then you're ok. I can go into more detail if you want, but that should give you enough information to make the right decision. And if you really want to learn, check out www.bcae.com -- read through the modules. It's very good.

There will be power loss!!! But not much, probably not enough to be any kind of a problem your extending what? a few feet?

Nice link ace, I will have to bookmark that one.

It also depends on how you are connecting the extension (dont use wire nuts). I would use a fuse holder, perfect for connecting two cables and the added protection of a (presumably additional) fuse

Thanks for the info guys. I need to extend it maybe 3 feet at most. I'll probably install a fuse holder since i have an extra one laying around.
