A few electronics questions
One of the things I wish to upgrade in my S is the sound system. I already have a rough idea of what I want, but I have a few questions:
1. Does Alpine make a new model head-unit every year? I have my heart set on a 9857, but I can't seem to justify spending $150 more than a 9856. What I'm thinking is maybe I'll wait until next spring when Alpine intrudoces the 9858, and I can pick up a 9857 for $150.
2. One of the things I want is headrest speakers. I think that the S-pods are waay too much money. I was thinking of making my own version. I mean it can't be that hard, you just buy a sheet of aluminum, mark the places where I need to cut, and do it, right? The problem that I know I will run into is the leather cover. S-pods come with them, but I don't know where I can find it. Anyone know of a vendor that sells them? Also, what tool do you use to cut aluminum?
3. If I were to go with headrest speakers before a headunit, would the stock MY01 head unit support them?
Basically, I'm a cheap bastard and want to save money, but still want it done right.

If you insist on doing this project yourself (I'm all for using my own elbow grease over spending hard-earned money), a Dremel tool is your best bet for cutting. The aluminum will be too thick to cut accurately with shears, so use shears or a handsaw to cut to rough shape, then Dremel to fine tune. Not sure on the leather, but I'm sure Google will turn up plenty of places that will ship, and your phonebook will turn up plenty of local places that can get something useful in small quantities.
