Finally ordered the Spods...
I just got my S-Pods installed yesterday, and I have to say I am a bit disappointed. The guy at the place I had install them told me that some coaxial JL Audio speakers would be the best bang for my buck. He said that it would not be worth putting components in unless I added an amp or swapped out the head unit... and that was a three-fold increase on the quote.
As I drove away, I could notice that the sound was fuller, but when I put all the power in just the rear speakers, they were quite weak. I played with putting all of the power into the front (MUCH louder than the rear) and center, and the difference was nominal at best.
Does anyone else have a setup with the stock head unit and no amp that gives decent output in the rear speakers (coax or component)? The place has a nice 90-day upgrade policy that I plan to make use of... I just don't know what to try next. I feel like I just wasted $500.

The stock speakers are not really all that bad, if you are on a budget replace your head unit would be the best thing to do. Much better than trying to replace the speakers first I just pickup a Sony MEX-BT5000/Bluetooh for $250. Install it with all stock speakers and it sound great.
ATTENTION....ATTENTION!!!!Components and Coaxials have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE POWER OF THE SPEAKER. NOTHING. NO RELATION.
Component speakers simply mean....the "components" of the system are separate. The tweeter (the little guy) and the woofer (the big guy) are a separate unit.
Coaxial just means that that tweeter is MOUNTED in the woofer. Some brands, like JL, have the exact same speaker in those configurations. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE POWER CAPABILITIES OF THE SPEAKER.
Hondafan, your installer is incorrect. First of all, he told you JL is the best bang for the buck because he gets the highest commission from JL, rather than other manufacturers. JL speakers DO NOT work well without an amplifier. They arent very sensitive.
He should have recommended a speaker with 92db sensitivity rating (or more)
However, he was correct about one thing. You can add 100 more speakers to your car, you wont make a dent. The stock headunit is worthless.
The better the amp, the better the speakers, with the stock headunit, youll just be making the crappy sound louder, and clearer.
Thanks for the lesson... I admittedly know nothing about these things. I wasn't suggesting that components would work better - I just wanted to know if someone could recommend a good set of speakers (coaxial or component, doesn't matter to me) that work well with the stock head unit.
Consensus seems to be that I have to replace the HU anyway, though. So, even though I know that I can find 20 million different posts on this board about who has what setup, I am going to be greedy and ask for anyone willing to give me the cheapest way to get some sound out of my Pods.
Right now I have 5.25 JL Audio coaxials setup in my S-Pods with my stock head unit. I am unhappy with the setup and I am looking for the cheapest way to increase the volume, as the JLs just add a little (emphasis on "little") more fullness to the sound.
If someone can gear me towards a good set of speakers with 92db sensitivity rating (as NFRs2000NYC suggested, thanks again!), that would be great. [UPDATE] My JLs are 92db sensitivity... so this isn't the problem[/UPDATE]
If I must replace the HU to be happy, I would like a cost-effective quality replacement that will work with the in-dash controls (I have heard there are kits out there that work with "almost" every HU, but I want an assurance that I will be able to use those controls). Oh... and to be even pickier, I'd like one with an aux input for my [non-IPod] MP3 player. Also, then, what speakers do you recommend to pair with the new HU?
I thank you all for your time and input in helping me enjoy my tunes.
