Default Focal 165 KRX3 speaker setup

Hey S2ki,

I am the proud owner of a 2008 S2000. This car is everything that I wanted and more!! I am working on the sound system on my car and Currently am quite pleased with what I have going on so far. I have the Focal 165 KRX2's in the front, and they are being run by the new Kenwood Bluetooth Pandora Head Unit which I think has an AMAZING factory equalizer. My speakers are amped by a 4 channel Focal amplifier and they sound very crisp and clean. All the frequencies are clearly heard and there is absolutely no distortion even when you turn up the sound.

What I would like to do though is add more midbass to the car. So i did some research and came to the conclusion that I want my whole system to be Focal since I love their speakers and amp so much. I would like to run the 165 KRX 3's. These are not cheap speeakers but from what I can gather they will be well worth the money. Below is a link to the speakers.

So My only concern is how to make these speakers fit our car. The midbass is a 6.5" and the midrange is a 3 1/4" and there's a tweeter. I was wondering where you all would suggest mounting these. Ideally i would want them behind the rear seats. I'm just wondering if anyone has done something like this before to our car.

i would put midbass in stock 6.5 spot (sound deaden doors)
place the 3" mid in the factory tweeter location angle them twords center windshield
and mount tweeters on the A pillar, (custom mount glassed in to look factory) aim them to center windsheild to pull sound stage up.

Hi,

I have the KRX2's in the doors right now and I want those to stay because either way I want to run 2 sets of speakers for more sound when you're on the free way. However I was wondering if it's possible to have a shop customize that rear panel behind the seats to make them fit? I was told by my local shop that the midbass driver won't fit that there's not enough space behind there. Mind you focal makes very deep drivers since their magnets are HUGE.

im actually in the process of installing a set of KRX3 in my car and the woofer fits perfectly fine with a 3/4" spacer in the door location. for the mid range im fiber glassing speaker pods right front of the door handle and the tweeters will go in the A pillar, all aimed at where the dome light suppose to be.

You typically want to keep your sound stage up front. The speakers behind the headrest aren't necessary if your mids are receiving sufficient power and don't typically improve the overall sound stage.

The Focal Midbass will probably sound best sealed, so you may want to fabricate an enclosure for optimum midbass response.

If you are running a three way setup, you will want to tinker with placement prior to final installation as the placement of your speakers is extremely important, particularly your midrange and tweeters.

Do you intend to add a subwoofer or rely upon the three way setup solely? Will you be running passive or active?

Interesting, I guess I'll have to run the wires first then try holding the midrange in different areas of the car to see how it sounds. It is a 3 way setup, I was thinking of putting it in the door panel, if you see the other topic I starter i took a picture of where i think it'll fit nice and sour nice, right inside the door panel pocket. The nice thing about the Focal 3 way setup is that the midrange is a 3" speaker so it could possibly fit nicely in the door panel, or in the kick panel.

I do plan on also having a sub, something small since I want it to be in cabin, maybe a 6". I don't want crazy bass, my goal is mainly clarity which is why I'm sticking to Focal. I also have a audio control DQXS EQ from my old sound system that was in my other car that I am considering using, it had made a world of a difference in my other car (focal speakers also)
