Default Front Speakers Fitting Questions.

Hello All. I am determined to upgrade my '05 S2k stereo system now that I have time and money to work on this project. I currently have an Alpine HU with many pre-outs, so I am planning to get a 4-channel amp to support a single sub and a pair of 6.5" component.

I've been researching on this forum for over a week now, and read many threads on how to custom fit 6.5" speakers. One idea is to make your own 3/4" MDF baffle. Another idea is to purchase 1/2" Metra spacer. And another idea is to cut out the back end of the stock speaker basket. All ideas will not be a problem for me, but I am still unclear/skeptical on how a 6.5" speakers with a 2.54" top mounting depth will fit.

Wouldn't the speakers be rubbing against the door panel if a 3/4 " MDF baffle or 1/2" spacer be used?

Wouldn't the speaker magnet on a 2.54" top mounting depth speaker be touching the window if I decide cut the back of the stock speaker basket?

I am planning to get a set of Alpine SPX-17PRO or JL Audio C5-650, but that all depends on what will fit.

Sorry for posting on a topic that's been talked about over and over, but I havent seen any recent posting of current components such as Alpine SPX-17PRO or JL Audio C5-650, or anyone confirming that these components will fit in their '05 S2K.

Any help from you pros will be appreciated.

I would suggest making your own extension baffle. If you do, be sure to water proof it/paint it to prevent water from damaging it over time. Once you open up the door you can measure how much space you will have/need etc.

Some good info here:

Thanks Brian. That is a really good write up on "How to make MDF speaker brackets" by PAS2KNut.

So there's no problem with the speakers rubbing against the door panel using 3/4" MDF brackets?

Also, does anyone have JL Audio C5-650 or Alpine SPX-17PRO in their S2K? How do they sound? Will the JL or Alpine tweeters fit inside the stock tweeter location?

I havent kept up with car stereo technology for a while now. Used to love MB Quarts but since they got bought out by Maxxsonics, seems like MB Quarts haven't improved on their technology.

"So there's no problem with the speakers rubbing against the door panel using 3/4" MDF brackets?"

This will depend on the speaker that you choose and how large the outer diameter/shape that you make the baffles. Each speaker's frame is a bit different.

I have heard the JL's...they are nice (I have not heard the Alpine's). As for the tweeters...most can be made to fit. I would like to HIGHLY suggest these (don't know your budget) as they are fabulous! These CAN be found for less than $475:

Wow! Best rated 6.5" components on Car Audio Mag. Those are nice.

I did some researching and found the top mounting depth for Hertz MLK is 79.5mm or 3.14". I don think it's going to fit in the S2k door with that depth.

If they fit and I could find them for $500, I will buy for sure.

Please tell me you have a set of those in your S2K.

Currently...no, but I do plan to this coming spring/summer. If you have had the opportunity to hear these you would do what ever it took to get these in there! I've installed a set recently in a friends Mazda 3.

Want some?...I can get em for you! No BS..and brand new from my local shop.

Let me know.

Thanks but no thanks. I am still debating on $300 set or $500 sets. If I decide on $500 set, then I am sure I'll be able to demo Hertz MLK somewhere in my hood (South Cali). But thanks for the suggestion, it opened my mind and ears about audiophile components. I'll keep you posted on what I'll end up with. Thanks Brian.
