Thumbs up Full LED Fog Lights/Driving Lights...? POSSIBLE?

Hey guys,

I have been thinking of making a custom led fog light/driving light...

NOW, I have seen these fog lights with 15led's, but how many do you think that it would take in order to emulate a good 55watt headlight bulb?

I want to experiment with some led and try to see if i can make them really bright in order to use for driving lights, am I crazy?

I know you can probably stuff about 30 10mm leds into a normal fog light opening, do you think this is enough?

Thoughts?

Check into the Luxeon Star LEDs.

The brightest one I could find on their site, http://www.luxeonstar.com/item.php?id=2213...artno=5027-PW14 is 130 lumens.

Since you're probably wanting closer to 2100 lumens, you'll need around 16. And that's probably just for one light cluster.

Some advantages, though, would be the ability to make custom shapes and even custome colors by adding in some colored LEDs to 'tint' the output.

For their lower-output colored LEDs, they happend to already have clusters in circular and square shapes. You might want to browse around.

Check this circular cluster out. it's only $159(ouch!) http://www.luxeonstar.com/item.php?id=401&...artno=LXHL-NL92

This is not possible. Even if you had enough LEDs to EQUAL the light output of a 55W halogen, the real issue is the lens, as you need something to focus and contain all that light. You can have it for the look, but as far as helping you see anything, not gonna happen.

For example, I have tried out several different brands of LED flashlights at work. There are some cheaper ones that use 12-15 LEDs and have an equal lumen output on paper due to the individual outputs of the LEDs added together. Then, I have used a flashlight with one very strong 5 watt LED in it. This light is MUCH brighter while putting out the same ammount of total light as the 12-15 LEDs in the other flashlight because it is all focused.

I have seen these LED lights on Mustangs and 350z lately, but I don't think they are anything more than cosmetic.

Yeah thats what i have been thinking about (the focusing). I mean, I could go with 10mm and the focus will be much much straight forward rather than all over the place like with 5mm ones.

As far as the lens goes, I can just use a straight (non convexed) piece of glass so that it doesn't really mess with the 10mm light pattern... ?

I had a thread on this subject.....was going to use Audi S6 DRL's to do this but the light housing was too big to use in an s2000 bumper....

If you really curious do a seach under my SN or PM me!

Bottom line: THIS IS NOT EASY AND CERTAINLY WON'T BE CHEAP

here's my thread:

If you want to brainstorm ideas to make this work let me know. I still have my brand new stock ap2 bumper and basically I'm waiting on the new 2008 cars to see if anyone has a smaller DRL LED light I can buy and "graft" into the s2000 bumper!

Go here and ask the same question:

www.candlepowerforums.com

There are a lot of high power LEDs now. You will probably want to use the 3watt or 5watt LEDs.

Cree, SSC, Luxeon...
