Thumbs up Garage Door Opener Mod Question

Today I decided to do a mod. I want an easy and secure way to open my garage door. I have a 2007.

I found this from Modifry: http://modifry.com/freebies/old/garage/garage.htm

Here is a photo of my modified working remote

I soldered 2 wires to the switch on the garage door opener and then connected those 2 wires to a relay. I can trip the relay with a 9 volt battery and the opener opens the garage door. I want to trip the relay by flashing my brights like the Modifry page describes. I am having a hard time finding the right wires to tap into. I need to connect my white and black wires to a 12V switched source.

From Modifry's page, here is how I understand the functionality. When I have my DRL, low beams, or high beams on, the garage remote is not powered. The garage remote is only powered when flashing my brights(pulling the trigger towards the driver - turning on low beams and high beams together). Am I understanding this correctly? This is the functionality I would like .

From Modifry's page the instructions are: You want the red/yellow (positive) and red/blue (negative) wires on the left (driver) side [...] Look for the wires in the wire bundle coming from the high beam (duh). I pulled out my multimeter to test and verify before I started cutting and splicing wires. I tapped into red/yellow and red/blue (Not the wires going to the high beams - the two wires alone in the fender red/blue and red/white, the ones from the larger tube - I drew two white lines to the wires) and they did not read ~12 volts while flashing my headlights.

I need some help, what do I need to do? Are there any differences between the AP1 and AP2 wiring that would prevent me from doing this mod this way? Thanks everyone.

you would want to connect your trigger wire between the high beam switch and the headlight relays. That way there should be no power from the DRL's but you will still get signal when flashing.

FWIW when driving with the headlights on it will always be triggering the garage door opener, but most have reported no ill effects.

The problem with the DRL systems is they put 6 volts on the high beams during the day, which probably will not activate your relay, BUT it almost for sure is enough to keep the relay activated once it's turned on by a "real" high beam flash. So rather than mess with the wires at the high beams, try this instead:

Go under the dash and try to find the orange wire that is on the "high beam cut relay", located under the dash kind of above the fuse box and near the keyless entry module (close to the left side of the car). You should be able to see the connector on the bottom of the relay, which is a gray connector housing with 5 wire holes but only 4 wires. The wires are orange, blue, red/blue, and blue/red.

Connect one side of your relay coil to the orange wire.

Connect the other side of your relay to the "+12v battery" wire on the fuse box.

How it works - when you turn on the high beams or "flash to pass" a ground will be applied to the orange wire, which will cause your relay to activate. Normally the relay has +12v on both sides of the coil so it stays off until you hit the high beams.

Now, since you are powering your opener from the built-in battery, you don't really want it to run all the time if you use the high beams a lot. If you just use them occasionally for only a minute or two this should be fine. But if you need to use the high beams for a long time you will need some more complicated stuff.

Old thread but thank you so much Modifry! I have an 06 and did this mod today using your instructions above and it works great. You should add this to your site as an option for owners that have DRL.
